Hi over there in Ballinasloe,
My Grandfather's Grandmother was Patrick Satunton's granddaughter. Patrick Staunton was born in Longford in 1767 and married Catherine Mulhare in Clonfert in 1810. He was sentenced in 1820 in Ballinasloe for being a Ribbonman and running a Hedge School without a proper license ( it seems). He, Peter Larkin, and Father John Rigney were all sentenced to life for sedition.
I am interested where I can find "that" political drama side of 1700s - early 1800s Ballinasloe area. I know after Patrick and Peter were shipped out Ballinasloe grew & became quite wealthy and that is what the town celebrates today...but I'm interested in the rebellious poor people before the Trenches gentrified it:-) Are there any histories or documents pertaining to this episode around?
Many thanks, Rahni

Hi Rahni
Your best bet would be the British Newspaper Archive online. For example RIBBONMEN 1820
Do you know if he was living in Ballinasloe or just sentenced there at the Azzizes. The story of the actual incident may have taken place beyond Ballinasloe.

Thanks so much Rua!
I'll go hunting in that direction now. What I'm really looking for though, is qualitative histories of the area in that time. Can you recommend any in particular?
From what I can gather the sentencing was in Galway Assizes; the two lads and the Father were arrested near Ballinasloe. It appears 1810-1820 Clonfert-Ballinasloe area was when & where the drama happened. I'm hazarding a guess that the 1st Earl and Patrick (being the same age yet opposite sides of the political/religious spectrum) had a fair few run-ins:-)
I've spent decades researching India-Pakistan-Afghanistan religious politics/sociology & grew up believing that my famiy history was so bland and boring! I had no idea the extent to which the English were thumping around Irelend in the 19th century. So much catching up to do - can't wait to come to Ballinasloe for a month of roaming around next year!
Cheers and Merry Christmas from Australia!
