Hello Everyone. I have just joined this site, thank you for accepting me.

I am searching any information on John Gavin who married Mary Car or Carr, they baptised thier daughter Mary Ann Gavin in January 1835 (my Great Grandmother). On the baptism record it says they lived in Kentfield, Rahoon, Galway. If there is anyone who knows Gavins or Cars who stem from that area who may have information I would be very grateful.

Mary went to England where she married my Grandfather, in 1855 she states on  her marriage cert that her father was a farm labourer and he is deceased, but where he died I do not know, also the famine occured, that may have been why she left Ireland. Many thanks for reading this .

  • Barbi,

Subscription site  www.rootsireland.ie has a record of the marriage of a John Gavin to Mary Carr in Rahoon on April 23rd 1833. Address: Kentfield.

Witnesses: Peer Kilgarif and Honor Carr.

The following baptisms for Mary - February 1st 1835 - Sponsors: Peter Walsh and Bridget Walsh; Mary - November 19th 1837 - Sponsors: Peter Walsh and Mary Car; John Gavin - March 23rd 1840. It is possibe that one of the girls was named "Maria"or "Mariah" . I will check for a parish record.

  • Barbi,

Rahoon parish record for Mary Gavin - Baptism February 1st 1835.  Top of left hand page.

    Apparently both are just "Mary".

Townland of Kentfield is on the Moycullen road (N59). The Tithe records have a Bartly Gavin in the adjoining townland of Gortatleva. I did not find a John Gavin as a land holder in either The Tithe Records or the Griffith's Valuation which were taken c1850.

Kentfield was the home of the Palmer family who had a flour mill in Galway.

I attach the record for Mary in 1835 and  the Tithe record for Bartly Gavin.

    Regards,

  • Barbi,

The attached House Valuation record for a John Gavin in Dangan Upper may relate to your late grandfather. The house is the property of a John Gunning and is recorded as vacant. The name John Gavin has a line drawn through it.

  • I am amazed and delighted to have received such positive feed back to my post about John Gavin and his family, within hours I have been able to finally fill in some blank spaces on my family tree, that has eluded me for so long. Many many thanks to Patricia and McCoy for giving your time to research and send links, I am indebted to you both. Since getting the new info I have been able to find the records of John Gavin's death. I am hoping to visit Galway in the new year and maybe get a sense of the area.

  • Hi Patricia, I live in Kerry, I came to Galway but at that time had no idea that that's where my great  grandmother was from, next time, hopefully in the new year I will be able to trace footsteps!. Again thank you for your invaluable help.
