I am trying to find forbears of Michael Lowry 1880-1886 and his wife Jane McCreery/ McCann 1813-1897.

They had a son William (McCreery) Lowry born in 1835 in Raffery, County Down who married Annabella Newell on 17 June 1858 and they emigrated to New Zealand.

I am a decendant of one of their children born in New Zealand who moved to Melbourne Australia.

thank you in anticipation,

  • Hello Liz

Thanks for your query.  I've attached two guides that should help in your research, produced by our resident Genealogist.  One focuses on researching Northern Irish ancestors and the second on searching passenger lists which are often in the port of arrival.

  • Hello Liz,

I’m not related, but I’d like to add to the information that Bernadette kindly provided in her reply of 30 September 2021.

For example, I located the baptism index for William McCreery Lowry at the subscription Ancestry.com website, showing he was baptized in the Killinchy Presbyterian Church on 1 October 1834. Only his father, Michael Lowry, is named as the parent in the index. The baptism record is on Family History Library film number 824373 Item 4. The index is below:

Ireland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911

    Name: William Mc Creery Lowry
    Gender: Male
    Baptism Date: 1 Oct 1834
Baptism Place: Presbyterian, Killinchy, Down, Ireland
    Father: Michael Lowry
FHL Film Number: 824373 Item 4

The Ancestry.com index was compiled from microfilms held by the Latter Day Saints (LDS).

According to information at the Latter Day Saints Family History Library Catalog, Film Number 824373 Item 4 includes a list of Killinchy Presbyterian baptisms and marriages for the years 1812 to 1845, as well as Killinchy Parish Church (Church of Ireland) registers of baptisms from 1820 to 1877; marriages from 1825 to 1844; and burials from burials from 1831 to 1836.

You can order many LDS microfilms from your local Family History Center, but upon further investigation about this film at the LDS website, I found that it does not circulate to Family History Centers, and is only available at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.

The Presbyterian Church records for Killinchy and other Presbyterian congregations in Ireland are not held locally by the churches, but at the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland, known as PRONI. Some Presbyterian church registers are also held by the Presbyterian Historical Society of Ireland.

For more information about Presbyterian Church records in Ireland go to the presbyterianireland.org website link at: https://is.gd/wDnof6

PRONI’s “A Guide To Church Records” gives further information showing the Killinchy Presbyterian registers of baptisms and marriages are available from 1812 to 1854 and marriage from 1813 to 1845, with gaps.

You would either have to travel to PRONI in Belfast to search the parish registers on your own; hire PRONI staff to look for the registers for you; or hire staff from the Ulster Historical Foundation, in Newtownards, Down, to do the research for you.

There is no charge to search the church registers at PRONI if you do the search yourself.

For more information about the PRONI enquiry service, and to request a search of the church records, see: https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/proni-enquiry-service

The townland of Raffery, also known as Raffrey, was located in the Civil Parish of Killinchy, according to the IreAtlas Townland Data Base at: https://is.gd/qdKxzj

Back at the Ancestry.com website I located the Killinchy baptism indexes for what look like five of William’s siblings. Four of the indexes give Michael as the name of the child’s father. The index for the oldest child Robert, only gives the name of the mother, Jane Lowry.

I’ve included the 1834 index for William to show the full chronology of the baptisms:

The full Presbyterian Church baptism records of these children should give you more information, as quoted below from the FamilySearch website link at: https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Ireland_Presbyterian_Church_Records

    Baptisms

“These give the name of child, names of parents, usually the mother’s maiden name, date of birth, names of sponsors and the address (townland) of the parents. In the Presbyterian Church, the baptisms did not always closely follow the birth. This may have been due to a lack of diligence on the part of the minister or it may have reflected a lack of money to have the ceremony performed.”

At the Ancestry.com website I also looked for the marriage record of Michael Lowry and Jane anywhere in County Down, but didn’t find it.

This doesn’t mean there will not be a marriage record for Michael Lowry and Jane. It may not have been indexed. If you recall information from PRONI’s “A Guide To Church Records,” shows that Killinchy baptisms and marriages are available from 1812 to 1854.

THE MARRIAGE OF WILLIAM LOWRY AND ANNABELLA NEWELL

In your message to Ireland Reaching Out you had mentioned that William Lowry and Annabella Newell were married on 17 June 1858. I wanted to find their civil marriage record as this would note where each was living at the time of the marriage; what William’s occupation was; and the first name of Annabella Newell’s father.

I looked for their civil marriage record at the free irishgenealogy.ie website. Protestant marriages in Ireland were recorded by the government beginning 1 April 1845, though Catholic marriages weren’t recorded until 1864.

I located the marriage between William and Annabella at irishgenealogy.ie. They were married in the Lissara, County Down, Presbyterian Meeting House on 17 June 1858. This is the date of marriage you have for them Liz.

The marriage record further shows that Lissara is in the Parish of Kilmore, which is a reference to the Civil Parish of Kilmore. You probably already have this marriage record, but I’d like to go over some details in the marriage record. For quick access, I’ve attached the marriage record to this reply.

At the time of marriage William was a 23 year old bachelor and Annabella a 21 year old spinster. William’s occupation was “Farmer,” and his residence at the time of marriage was Raffery. His father, as you noted, was Michael Lowry. Michael was a farmer. Unfortunately for genealogists, the first and maiden names of the mothers of the groom and bride were not recorded in civil marriage records, at least, non that I’ve ever found.

No occupation is recorded for Annabella. Her residence is Barnamaghery.
Annabella’s father is recorded as John Newell, also a farmer.

It is interesting to note that the IreAtlas shows that 646 acres of Barnamaghery were located in the Civil parish of Killinchy, and another 775 acres of the townland in the Civil Parish of Kilmore. See: https://is.gd/Jb0NCM

William and Annabella were married by a minister named Ringland Fisher. The witnesses to the marriage were William Jackson and Agnes Patterson.

Both William and Annabella signed the marriage register unassisted, meaning they could both read and write.

The marriage record is an indication that the Lissara Presbyterian Meeting House was the parish church for Annabella and her family, as marriages traditionally take place in the bride’s parish.

The PRONI “Guide To Church Records” shows Lissara Presbyterian baptisms are available from 1809 to 1909, marriages from 1809 to 1911, and burials from 1809 to 1888.

This means that Annabella’s baptism may be in the Lissara Prebyterian Church registers, that the marriage of her parents may have also been recorded in the Lissara Presbyterian registers, held by PRONI in Belfast.

I looked for Annabella Newell’s baptism at Ancestry.com but didn’t find it, and so it appears it has not been indexed by Ancestry.

I then went to the free FamilySearch website at https://www.familysearch.org/en/ to look for her baptism record, or baptism index, and found her baptism index.

Annabella’s baptism took place in Lissara County Down on 5 December 1836. The index however does not mention the church she was baptized in. Her father is John Newell. Her mother is Eliza, with no maiden name recorded. The index from FamilySearch is below:

I suspect that the baptism would have take place in the Lissara Presbyterian Meeting House, as that is where Annabella and William were married in 1858.

Also at FamilySearch I located the baptism indexes for five more children of John and Eliza Newell. One of the children was baptized on the same day as Annabella. He and Annabella may have been twins. But, they may not have been twins either, as the baptism of one of the children may have been postponed until a later time.

Below are the baptisms for the Newell children. All the children were baptized in Lissara, County Down. Again, the indexes do not record the religious denomination of the church, though I suspect it was the Lissara Presbyterian Church.

I’ve included Annabella again so that you can see the full chronology of the baptisms:

A book by Brian Mitchell called, “A Guide To Irish Parish Registers” shows there were four 19th century religious congregations in the Kilmore Civil Parish with parish registers. These include the Kilmore Church of Ireland, with registers commencing in 1820; the Kilmore Presbyterian Church, with registers from 1833; the Lissara Presbyterian Church with registers from 1809; and the Rademon Subscribing Presbyterian Church with registers from 1830.

All of the Newell baptism index from FamilySearch show the baptisms took place in Lissara. These baptisms then, would have taken place in the Lissara Presbyterian Church.

The Lissara Presbyterian Church however, is not located in Lissara, but in the townland of Crossgar.

A Google Map shows the location of the Lissara Presbyterian Church in Crossgar: https://is.gd/pxiBKg

For a Street View of the Lissara Presbyterian Church in Crossgar, go to: https://is.gd/ncrWii

The 1858 marriage record for William and Annabella shows that William’s residence was “Raffery,” and that Annabella’s residence was Barnamaghery.

Another Google Map shows that the Barnamaghery Road and Raffrey are north of the Lissara Presbyterian Church in Crossgar: https://is.gd/KZM9WL

For a Google Street View of the Barnamaghery Road, see: https://is.gd/PbT6WI

For a Google Street View of Raffrey, and the Raffrey Presbyterian Church constructed in 1843, go to: https://is.gd/mlinA2

An Ordnance Survey Map of Raffrey, which is attached to this reply, shows the location of the Raffrey Presbyterian Meeting House and graveyard, as well as the McCreery Cross Roads in town. William Lowry’s middle name was McCreery, indicating a relationship with the McCreery family, or a friendship with the McCreery family. The Ordnance Survey Map, from the GeoHive website, is from the 1837 to 1842 time period.

A second Ordnance Survey Map of Raffrey (attached) shows the location of the National School, situated north of the Presbyterian Church and the McCreery Cross Roads. The Lowry children likely attended this National School when they were growing up.

The Raffrey Presbyterian Meeting House would have been relatively new when the Ordnance Survey Map was compiled. The Ordnance Survey Map shows you what Raffrey looked like when the Lowry family lived there.

According to a note at the Find A Grave website, the Presbyterian Church in Raffrey was constructed in 1843: https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2554632/raffrey-presbyterian-church…

Earlier you saw that William Lowry and his siblings were baptized in the Killinchy Presbyterian Church. A Google Map shows that Killinchy is northeast of Raffrey, the Barnamaghery Road, and the Lissara Presbyterian Church in Crossgar, and just west of the Strangford Lough: https://is.gd/WkTbjJ

For a Google Map of the location of the Killinchy Presbyterian Church, see: https://is.gd/xCGfZa

    LOWREYS IN GRIFFITHS VALUATION

I next wanted to see if I could find Michael or Jane Lowry, or their children, and John or Eliza Newell, or their children, in an Irish property tax record known as Griffiths Valuation.

I specifically wanted to see if any Lowrys were recorded living in Raffrey, Civil Parish of Killinchy, and any Newells living in Barnamaghery, which as you saw earlier from the IreAtlas, was partly in the Civil Parish of Killinchy and partly in the Civil Paris of Kilmore.

Griffiths Valuation was enumerated in the 32 counties of Ireland between 1847 and 1864. The valuation for the townlands in the Killinchy and Kilmore Civil Parishes was completed by the year 1863.

Unlike a census, Griffiths Valuation did not enumerate individual members of a family, such as husband, wife, and children in a household residence. Those named in the valuation were individuals who paid to lease property, such as land, houses, and outbuildings. Each person who paid to lease the property was called an “Occupier.” The other person listed in Griffiths Valuation was the person who owned the property, or who worked as the middleman collecting the rent on Gale Day for the owner. This middleman was called the “Immediate Lessor.”

You can access Griffiths Valuation transcriptions and original copies for free at the Ask About Ireland website link at:
    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

I didn’t find Michael Lowry in Griffiths Valuation in Raffery. But Griffiths Valuation shows that a John, Robert, Jane, and a John Lowry Jr., were leasing property in Raffery. Jane may be the mother, or the daughter who was baptized in the Killinchy Presbyterian Church on 26 December 1827. By the time of Griffiths Valuation in County Down for the year1863, she would have been 36 years old. It’s not possible to tell however, if the Jane Lowry in Griffiths Valuation is the mother or the daughter.

Robert Lowry was baptized on 16 February 1824, and so in 1863 he would have been 39 years old. His younger brother John was baptized on 26 December 1832, which would have made him 31 years old in 1863. John Jr. in Griffiths Valuation may have been John’s son.

Griffiths Valuation for Raffrey is attached to this page. The entry for John Lowry is at Number 14. Robert Lowry is at Number 17, Jane Lowry at Number 19, and John Lowry Jr. at Number 27a, at the bottom of the page. All the Lowreys leased their property from an Immediate Lessor named Lord Dufferin & Claneboye.

The numbers/letters to the left of the Occupiers in Raffrey are reference markers showing the location of each person’s property in Raffrey, as found on an Ordnance Survey Map that accompanied Griffiths Valuation. The Griffiths Valuation Map is much like the Ordnance Survey map attachments of Raffrey you saw earlier.

Griffiths Valuation shows that John Lowry, at map reference 14, leased a house, offices, and over 32 acres of land from Lord Dufferin and Canboye. The land was valued at 30 Pounds. The house and offices were valued at 7 Pounds. The total valuation for John Lowry’s lease was 37 Pounds. He would have paid a percentage of this value toward the tax.

An “office” in Griffiths Valuation refers to an outbuilding, such as a barn, stable, blacksmith shop, piggery, etc. Some Occupiers had offices, meaning more than one outbuilding.

Map reference 17 shows that Robert Lowry also leased a house, offices, and over 23 acres of land, valued at 21 Pounds and 10 Shillings. His house was valued at 2 Pounds and 10 Shillings. The total value of his lease was 24 Pounds.

Jane Lowry, at map reference 19, is shown to have leased a house, office and over 17 acres of land. The land was valued at 18 Pounds. The house and office were valued at 1 Pound and 15 Shillings, for a total valuation of 17 Pound and 15 Shillings.

John Lowry, Jr., at map reference 27a leased a house, office and over 31 acres of land. The land was valued at 28 Pounds, the house and office at 3 Pounds, for a total valuation of 31 Pounds.

The Griffiths Valuation map for Raffery can be downloaded from the Ask About Ireland website, but in this case, only the Ordnance Survey Map of Raffery you saw earlier was available for download, not the map with the Griffiths Valuation reference numbers and letters. I’m not sure why.

Jane Lowry in Griffiths Valuation may actually be the mother recorded in Griffiths Valuation, as I found her death record at the irishgenealogy.ie website, showing she died in Raffery on 28 December 1874 at the age of 83 years. She is shown to have been the “Widow of a Farmer.” The cause of death was, “Bronchitis 10 years.” The person who was present at Jane’s death and who reported the death to the registrar was a person named Mary Scott, of Raffery. Her relationship to Jane is not mentioned. Jane’s death was recorded in the Downpatrick Registration District on 18 January 1875. Her death is Number 236 in the attached death register.

    NEWELLS IN GRIFFITHS VALUATION

The 1858 marriage for William Lowry and Annabella Newell shows that at the time of marriage, Annabella’s residence was Barnamaghery. The IreAtlas Townland Data Base noted earlier, shows that Barnamaghery crossed the boundaries of two Civil Parishes, Killinchy and Kilmore.

With this information I looked for any Newells in Griffiths Valuation leasing property in Barnamaghery.

I only found one Occupier named Newell in Griffiths Valuation. This is for Isaac Newell in Barnamaghery, Civil Parish of Kilmore, at map reference 35a. See the attachment.

Earlier in this reply you saw that Isaac Newell, son of John and Eliza Newell, was baptized in the Killinchy Presbyterian Church on 19 April 1827.

Griffiths Valuation shows that Isaac leased a house, offices, and over 24 acres of land from an Immediate Lessor named the Marquis of Londonderry. The land was valued at 19 Pounds and 15 Shillings. The house and offices were valued at 4 Pounds and 10 Shillings, for a total valuation of 24 Pounds and 5 Shillings.

The five occupiers recorded after Isaac are Hans McCartney, James McMullin, Margaret Bennett, James McMullen, and Thomas Jackson. Their Immediate Lessor was Isaac Newell. For these people Isaac was acting as the middleman overseeing their leaseholds for the owner, who was likely the Marquis of Londonderry.

If you go back up the Griffiths Valuation page to map reference 30b, you’ll see an Occupier named John Lowrey. He may have been related to the Lowry family of Raffery.

Like the map for Raffery, the Griffiths Valuation Map for Barnamaghery seems to have been replaced by an Ordnance Survey Map with no map reference numbers showing the location of the leaseholders’ properties. The map for Barnamaghery is attached to this reply.

A second Ordnance Survey Map of Barnamaghery is also attached, and shows the location of the National School. The Newell children may have attended this school.

ISAAC NEWELL’S MARRIAGE AND DEATH RECORDS

I found both the marriage and death records for Isaac Newell at the irishgenealogy.ie website.

Isaac Newell and Hannah Jelly were married in the Comber Presbyterian Church, County Down, on June 5, 1860. At the time of marriage Isaac was of “full age,” Hannah was 19 years old. Isaac’s occupation was farmer. His residence at the time of marriage was Barnamaghery. His father is John Newell, a “Farmer.”

Hannah’s residence at the time of marriage was Ballydrain. Her father was James Jelly, also a “Farmer.” The minister who married the couple by License was David Anderson. One of the witnesses to the marriage was Isaac Morehead. The second witness looks like G. H. Jelly.

    The marriage record is attached.

Brian Mitchell’s book, “A Guide To Irish Parish Registers,” shows the existence of three different Presbyterian Churches in the Comber Civil Parish. These are: the 1st Comber Presbyterian Church with registers beginning in 1847; the 2nd Comber Presbyterian Church with registers from 1849; and the Ballygowen Presbyterian Church with registers from the year 1860.

It’s difficult to tell because of the handwriting in Isaac and Hannah’s marriage record, but it looks like they were married in the 2nd Presbyterian Church of Comber. I could be mistaken about that however.

Isaac Newell died in Barnamaghery on 20 August 1896 at the age of 70 years. At the time of death he was a farmer. He was also a widower. The cause of death was Diarrhea Two Days. Congestion of Brain Thirty Hours.” The person who was present at the death and who reported the death to the registrar was Isaac’s brother Thomas, of Barnamaghery. The death was recorded in the Downpatrick Registration District on 25 August 1896. The death record is the first entry in the attachment at Number 498.

The FamilySearch index shown earlier in the reply shows that Thomas Newell was baptized in Lissara, County Down, on 22 October, 1830.

Concerning Isaac’s wife Hannah Newell, I found what I believe to be an index of death at the irishgenealogy.ie website. Full death records aren’t available at irishgenealogy.ie for the years 1864 to 1870, but will be sometime in the future.

The index shows that the death of a Hannah Newell was recorded in the Downpatrick Civil Registration District in 1868. At the time of death she was 27 years old. See the index below:

For instructions on how to obtain a copy of Hannah’s full death record, see the irishgenealogy.ie link at: https://is.gd/flo5kE

Charges apply when ordering civil birth, marriage or death records from the General Register Office (GRO) in Ireland. If you order, request a photocopy of the death record, as photocopies of records are not as expensive as certified copies used for legal purposes.

Liz, I’m going to close here. As you can see this reply is pretty lengthy.

Don’t hesitate to write with any questions.
