Hello Ireland XO,

I am looking for Bernard Connell of Clonallan Parish and his wife Ellen or Eleanor Grant.

Here is the information that I do have:

A daughter Rose was born in 1828, son Michail born in 1830 and then son Hugh born in 1832. After that there are 2 more sons ~ James(possibly 1836) and Owen born April of 1838. I have baptismal records for all children except James. All records come from a Roman Catholic Church in Clonallan, County Down.

In Sept. of 1842 there is a burial record for Bernard Connell from a Clonallan Catholic Church to a cemetery named Traymount.     In 1849 Eleanor Connell receives a dispensation to marry Edward McEvoy. She gives birth to a son in 1850 and then the father Edward died that same year. On the Ship's manifest she is recorded as Ellen Connell widow with Edward age 6 as being from Newry, County Down.

No matter where I look I cannot find any information as to where this family lived in the Clonallan Parish of County Down. I would be most appreciative if someone could tell me what records I should look for and where. Thank You in advance!                 Kathleen Connell Ryan

  • Bernard isn’t listed in the tithe applotment records for Clonallen so that suggests he was a labourer. They can be tricky to trace as they often moved about a bit to follow the available work.

If none of the baptism records contains a townland then there aren’t really many other records from that period to consult. However you could try and trace the sponsors at the baptisms. Usually family or close friends, if you can find them, then normally you can conclude the Connells lived fairly close by.

Traymount cemetery is a couple of miles outside Newry in the townland of Lisserboy. It gets a mention on the Ros Davies site:

The site says that it was a Miss Ellen Connell who married Edward McEvoy.  If that’s accurate then not a widow. I hope you have the correct lady.
