John Hurley abt 1846 - 1906
He is my 2nd great grandfather on my maternal side
Name: John Hurley (no record of a middle name)
Married Mary Jackson (1854? - 1919) in 1881 at Oldham Lancashire England, (I have common dna matches through her family line on Ancestry)
There is a vague family story of him being handed up to a boat leaving Ireland as a baby, but I have no proof of this. He did seem to know he was Irish and from Mayo (according to census records). He did end up in England. If his date of birth on the few Census records i’ve found are any indication he didn’t know for sure what year he was born, which is not that uncommon as far as i can tell. Birthdates range from 1848, 1843, and 1846. He definitely died in 1906.
I haven’t found any mention of his Religion, and I have not found records earlier than 1881 as of yet.
I have done the DNA testing through Ancestry, and there is a whole whack of dna matches that I have no idea how they connect to me but this is the only line I haven't managed to find some connections with yet, and many do seem to be from Irish descent. My DNA story shows connections to both Ireland (specifically Munster and the Beara Peninsula), and with Northern Ireland. The latter is mostly explained through my Paternal line.
I’ve been looking through shared trees of some of these DNA matches trying to find commonalities, but as you can imagine that is a huge task.
I absolutely understand that this is a long shot, but any tips to figuring out his ancestry is greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks!

Megan:
The surname Hurley is almost exclusively a Co. Cork surname. Also found in Co. Kerry, Co. Limerick and other areas of Munster province. Not a Co. Mayo surname. So maybe the DNA results pointing to the Beara Peninsula re related to John Hurley. Do you have his fathers name from the 1881 marriage? www.irishgenealogy.ie (free site would have available baptismal records for the Southwest Cork area.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Roger,
Thank you for such a quick response. I did wonder about the surname. I had done a bit of poking around the message boards and noticed it was more prevelant in other counties. I decided to start with Co.Mayo because in the earliest census I found with him he listed Co. Mayo. Subsequent census records it is listed only as Ireland.
My info about the marriage I believe is a hand written note from my grandmother. I will have to go back and find it, but no father listed.
I will see what I can find on the irish genealogy page in SW Cork. Thanks againMeganM
