  • Pat,

I'm afraid I can't find any record for John Cruice born in Ballinasloe in 1828. Can you tell me where you got the record from?.  I found a marriage of John H Cruice and Margaret Emily MacNamara in Clare (at Killadysert) in 1854. Her father was Patrick McNamara. No witness names are given. John's address is given as Liverpool. If you are absolutely sure that Margaret was born in 1830 there was Margaret McNamara born to Patrick McNamara and Mary O'Halloran in Doora-Barefield. On the other hand, there was Margaret McNamara born on Killadysert in 1833 to Patrick McNamara and Joan O'Dea. Considering that the wedding was in Killadysert  1833 is a likely birth date for Margaret.

  • My ancestors came from Castleblakeney, County Galway, which is in the parish of Ballymacward. I know that there was a Cruice family living in the area. The most recent name I used to hear about was of a man called Gerdie Cruice. He may have been the last of the family but not sure. The surname is very unusual. I understood that they were descendants of the ruling gentry class of the Protestant persuasion. I hope this may be of help. The postal address would be Castleblakeney, Ballinasloe.

  • Pat,

I found the record on the subscription site rootsireland.ie. With infrequent names it is possible to do a search of all counties. Marriages in Killadysert are  only from 1867 online, but it seems that the marriage was reported in the newspaper, The Clare Journal, as the record seems to have come from the paper.

I found Eyre Lynch Cruice born in Balinasloe (Roman Catholic) in 1829 to Jno Cruice and Matilda (maiden name not given). I suspect that her maiden name was Lynch for two reasons, 1) the sponsors were Alex and Mary Lynch, 2) frequently, a child's middle name was its mother's maiden name. This was done to maintain the maiden name.

When I get a chance I will print the records, scan them and post them (it will probably be towards the end of the week).

    Best wishes, Kieran
