  • I've been searching the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie and have not located a marriage record for a John Moran to a Mary in the Westport registration district. I also did not see a Mary Moran death record around 1930 where the deceased was around 34.

Do you have Mary's maiden name?

Did they have any children born 1915-1919 ( we only have access to birth records up to 1919.)

  • Roger, not sure of any children born within those dates. Know she died following childbirth in November 1930 in Castlebar. Believe her maiden name was Omalley
Patricia, yes that is my grandfather.
Seem to be able to find out about him but no much about my grandmother.
    Thankyou both

  • The only marriage I've found so far for a John Moran with father Thomas was at Keelogues R.C. Church in Balla District in Castlebar Superintendent Registrar's District. This John was a 33 year-old farmer. Bride was Mary O'Donnell aged 32.

I wondered if Moran may have been incorrectly transcribed as Horan.

Did Mary have another forename? Are you sure her maiden surname was O'Malley? Had she been married before?

Did they definitely marry in Ireland?

  • Hi Maggie Thankyou for your help not sure if she had another name. Am aware that other family members namely Aunts and my mother went by their 2nd names not their 1st but not sure of any other names for her. Honestly could not tell you if surname is correct as my mother always said her mum's surname was omalley. Sandra

  • Did your mother give any clues as to where her mother was born or where she lived either before or after marriage? Weddings normally happened in the bride's parish. She might have been working away from home and married in the parish where she was living at the time.

Have you considered that Mary might have been a widow and that the marriage to John was registered under her married surname? Another possibility is that they married in another country.

Were there other children from the marriage of John & Mary? Where were they born? Don't give names if less than 100 years old.

Have you definitely located John on 1911 census? There were several possibilities age-wise for Mary (O')Malley in Mayo. She may have been elsewhere.

  • Hmmm...Here's a Mary o'Donnell and John Moran married in 1911 in Mayo. But if the 1894 John is your John, then he was only 17 and not of full age. Also, this John's mother is not Bermingham. Could this be your John, not the 1894 John??

  • Here is the transcription of the 1910 marriage record for a John Moran and ANNIE o'Donnell. There are baptism or birth records on rootsireland for at least three children born to this couple. Could this be the couple you are looking for?? What were the names of their children?

  • Thankyou all. My mother was one of 6 children and all born in Westport. When I had asked my mother where her ma came from she could not remember as she was 5 when she died. Have copy of my grandfather's birth certificate and is the one previously mentioned born on 21 April 1894 and parents listed as Thomas Moran and Mary Anne Bermingham

Can you tell us the names of your mother and her siblings? It might help us in this search.

  • Do you have your mother's birth certificate? It should have her mother's maiden surname on it.

Were there 2 boys called Thomas? The name Thomas is twice in your list.

How old was the eldest child when your grandmother died?

There seem to have been 4 Teresa Moran births registered in Westport District in 1920's + 1 with middle name Teresa + some with middle initial T. Also a Teresa born 1913.

  • Hi Maggie Sorry my mistake only one son called Thomas. Should have read John James. No I do not have my mother's birth certificate.
If Anne aka May was eldest she would have been 10 when her mother died as she was born in 1920

  • A photocopy of a birth registration costs 4 euros. A birth certificate costs a lot more. You just need a photocopy to confirm her mother's maiden surname. Do you know your mother's date of birth?

Information about ordering photocopies and certificates is on Irish Genealogy.ie website.

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie//churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

See "Help" section at right of screen. Click on "I want to get a copy of a certificate. What do I do?"

Alternatively you could wait until next year when your mother's eldest sister's birth registration will be uploaded and indexed on Irish Genealogy.ie website and you can look at it for free. The latest births on the website now are 1919.

  • In 1901John Joseph Moran lived in Cloonmonad, Westport urban with his grandmother Ann Bermingham and parents Thomas Moran and Mary Bermingham.
    He lived there in 1911.

States full age on cert. She was 6 +_ in 1911 so would be 16 or 17 at time of marriage so ??

  • In 1911 census John is noted as Joseph.

There is  Mary ann Josephine O'Malley living in Cloonamad,Westport, age 45  and may be a relative

On Ancestry there is a Ann Mary born June 1920 to John Joseph Moran , wife Mary.

If you have your Ma's marriage certificate it often indicates the father and mothers name.  Baptism certificate also has parents names as does confirmation record. Thats how I found my grandparents.

If you have the townland often looking at the census for other occupants can give you a clue to other relatives, which might lead onto further info for your Ma family.Census is free. The census will also tell you were theywere born , and if married how many years, children, and those still living

  • Thankyou Bob. My Aunty May christened Anne was born in 1920 . I do know that my grandfather did go by his second name Joseph. Seems to be a common trait in my ma's family! Thank you again

  • No problem. I did mean the church record for marriage, I wrote to the church via priest and managed to get a copy for a small donation, I presume your ma was married after 1920? Good luck

  • I think that the most straightforward, cheapest and hopefully quickest option is for Sandra to order a photocopy of her mother's birth registration. That document will verify her grandmother's names. Without that piece of information she's casting around in the dark. Sandra knows that her mother was born in Westport.
