My great-grandfather, Micheal Carroll, was born in Nenagh, Tipperary, Ireland in either 1851 or 1858. His father was Roderick Carroll, and his mother, Margaret.  He had a sister, Winnifred, that I know of. He emigrated to NYC, USA approximately 1867. He married Annie Logan in NYC and had 11 children. He worked as a blacksmith, and died in NYC, USA on 11/15/1897.   I am at a dead end trying to find when he came to the USA, when his birthday is, if anyone else besides Winnifred came over, etc.

I thank you for any help you can give me.  Elizabeth Shelley

  • Hello Lee1016,
A Baptism date is usually the day of the birth or 3 days later.

You say he was born in Nenagh, where did you get that from?
I have seen a Rody Carroll a Blacksmith in Ireland possibly a brother to Michael. Same place as Winifred's Baptism
I have see a Winifred Carroll Baptisim same parents as you mention but not in Nenagh.
Please let me know where you got nenagh from.

    Thanks
    Margot

  • Hi Margot - thank you so much for answering me!  My father (deceased) was researching his genealogy in the 1980's, by visiting the genealogy rooms at the New York City Public Library.  He made out a preliminary chart, and interesting Nenagh was added in red under Michael Carroll's name - I always assumed that Dad's Mother, my grandmother, told him that information about her father.  It stated : Nenagh, Tipperary, Ireland.  Michael's occupation in New York City, USA was blacksmith.  Perhaps the Rody was his father?  I also was contacted by a woman on Ancestry.com who lives across the USA from me who stated her great grandmother was Winnifred Carroll. She said Winnifred came to the US and stayed with her brother Michael in NYC, eventually meeting and marrying a man with the last name Ryan, and they settled in Chicago, Illinois, USA.  If you could direct me on how I can see the information you see, Winnifred and Rody Carroll, I would be so greatful!  Thank you so much!  Elizabeth

  • Hi Elizabeth,

The record I found of Winnifred was this.......see the link, left hand page.    17th April 1852.  Mothers maiden name Hogan.
02483/06, Borrisokane - Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI
Parish of Borrisokane, which is the next town to Nenagh. (Nenagh was the county town of Tipperary North Riding)

The lady with the tree in Ancestry.....Chicago....Edmund Ryan ...........on their marriage her name was Winnifred O'Connor.
    Not yours sorry.
This link, when you open it, if it shows a box, put roderick carroll and tick the box (sometimes it dosn't show the box)
This is Roderick Carroll a death ....a Blacksmith in the same Parish Borrisokane. He died in the Workhouse (the Hospital)

  • Dear Margot,  I can't begin to thank you enough for all your help.  I have been trying to find this info for years and could not.  I am going to contact the cousin who found me on Ancestry.com, and give her this information also, to see if we can sort this out.  You are too kind.  God bless you!  Elizabeth Shelley

This is a bonus.... 3 girls 258, 259 and 260. Have a good look at the dates. I have never come across this before being registered so late. All registered in 1891.
Just noticed 263 Julia they were registered when she was born.
    1890677.pdf (irishgenealogy.ie)

This is Julia in 1901....a Convent in Birr.   number 34 on the list.
    www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000941583/

In 1907 she travels to new York to her brother. on the ship Majestic.   You will have to pick up the record as it has his address but not his name. Number 1420 on the list.
There is a tree in Ancestry, a private one and Julia is there.
Let me know if you get to know the brothers name and I will see if I can get his birth.
    Cheers
    Margot

  • Dear Margot,  Thank you so much for all your help.  I just don't know of any of Michael Carroll's siblings except Winnifred.  Is there any way I can look at the birth records for the years 1851 and 1858 in Borrisokane Parish?   He died in 1897 in New York City of tuberculosis.  His death certificate states he was in this country for 30 years, so he must have emigrated in 1867?  His death certificate lists his parents as Roderick and Margaret Carroll.  That is all I know.  You have been so kind, thank you. With kindest regards and blessings, Elizabeth Shelley

  • Hi Elizabeth,

This is the site I use.........take you time as the records are not the best on the old eyes.

Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI

Go to Winidfred Baptism in 1852, then go back to see if you can find any others, then go forward from 1852.
Or you could join for a month on .............quicker to search on here, just put Carroll as the name and Roderick for the father and Tipperary. I am not in that now sorry.
