I am trying to find out about the Flynn and Leo families. This info is what I have so far.
Michael Flynn born 1875 Limerick (I don’t know his date of birth) he was a labourer/weigh master.

He married Margaret Barrett 1899 at St. John’s Cathedral, Limerick (no date)
When he got married he was 24 yrs and Margaret was 20. His address was Nelson street, Limerick City.
Margaret was living at Back Clare Street. Limerick.

John Flynn was their son born 8.6.1900 Sandmall, Limerick. Bap. 10.6.1900. St. John’s Cathedral, Limerick.
He worked making wheels for railway carriages.
No death date.

He married Mary Leo
In Limerick maybe St. John’s Cathedral, Limerick. I have no date.
I think she was born about 1911?
Her father was Patrick Leo and mother Mary Scot.
I think the Leo family came from Kilmallock county Limerick.
Mary’s father was Patrick Leo no dates and her mother was Mary Scot don’t know anything else about them.
William Leo was Patrick’s father?

Anything you can find on any of the above I would be very grateful.
Thank you very much
Fiona Graham-Flynn

  • Hi Fiona,

    the 1899 marriage is on irishgenealogy.ie - link attached - https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_re…

    This might be the family in 1901 and 1911 - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Limerick/Limerick_No__… http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Limerick/Limerick_No__…

The 1927 marriage of John Flynn and Mary Leo - https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_re…

This is the nearest match I could find for the death of John Flynn - https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

I hope some of this helps and I will have a look later for what I can find on the Leo family.

  • Hi Fiona,

I'm not having much luck with Mary Leo in that I can't find her in either the 1901 or 1911 census. If she got married in 1927 she should be in the 1911 one at least.

On her marriage cert her address is River Place and in 1911 there was a Leo family living in River Lane - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Limerick/Limerick_No__…

I do not know if this is her family and Mary is not listed as an occupant. It says that 9 children are living but only 8 are listed - it's possible that Mary is the one not listed but how likely is that?

Note also that some of the children were born in Waterford.

I cannot find any record of a marriage of Patrick Leo and Mary Scot - how sure are you about the name Scot. The Mary Leo in the census record above would appear to have been O'Connor.

Let me know what you think.

  • hi Jim, thank you for looking. I may have the wrong surname for Mary who mar Patrick Leo. I am not sure who gave me the surname of Mary Scot? If you can find a mar for Patrick Leo and a Mary O’Connor. That is very interesting.

I was thinking about Mary Leo and why she was not on the 1911 census. Perhaps she was born later that year, or a few more years on. That would explains why she is not there? On her mar cert it says John Flynn and Mary Leo were of full age. What if she wasn’t. She could have been younger?

I look forward to any findings you may turn up. I do not have her death either.

Going to ask some family members to see if they know anything.

    Thanking you for your help.

     Kind regards

    Fiona

  • Hi Fiona,

I believe this is the transcript of the 1889 marriage of Patrick Leo and Mary O'Connor https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/transcript-civil/6…

Here is a possible birth record for a Mary Catherine Leo in 1898 in Waterford to the above couple -  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

So why is she not on the census records? My theory is that although she was registered as Mary Catherine she was known as Kathleen and she is on the census as Kathleen - I have absolutely no way of proving that.

Death cert of a Mary Flynn in 1964 https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu… - I have no idea if this is the right Mary but you can search further on irishgenealogy.ie

  • Hi Jim,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

Thank you very much for the previous information you gave me.

The mar of Patrick Leo and Mary Catherine Leo ( Waterford)

The birth of Mary Catherine Flynn (nee Leo) and her death.

I am so pleased to receive all this info. I had been looking for years!!!!

Is it possible to look up some others. sorry there are quite a few, I hope i'm giving you the right info?

Michael Flynn -  born April/May/June quarter 1875. Limerick. found on Ancestery.

his father was also a Michael Flynn born I would imagine in Limerick. No Birth date.

Don't have anything on his wife, Michaels mother's name.

Michael Flynn (1875) married Margaret Barrett on 29.8.1899 Limerick. St. John's Cathedral I think. what you gave me.

Michael Flynn and Margaret Barrett had 12 children!

    John Flynn 1900.  Anastasia 1901.  Mary Kate 1902.  Josephine 1904.  Michael 1905.  Patrick 1906.  Joseph Francis 1907.  Nora 1910.  Francis 1911.  Elizabeth 1913.

Lily 1914? and Margaret Louisa 1916.

I dont have any of their birth dates ?

The father of the above Michael Flynn must have been born guessing around 1853 Limerick.

I have no birth for him, he must have died before 1899 Limerick as he was deceased on the mar cert of his son Micheal Flynn and Margaret Barrett.

I did find a death ref. on Ancestery for a Michael Flynn dont know if it is correct. April/May/June 1879 Limerick age 26? (could be wrong)

If you can find any of the above that would be great.

I have some more Leo family too.

Patrick Leo I don't have his Death. He was born 27.12.1866 Limerick or Waterford? Not sure where I got this.

He was a General Commercial Clerk.

His wife was Mary O'Connor Born around 1875 Limerick City ? I have no death either for her. They lived at 2 North Strand Limerick. and in 1911 at 2 River Lane, Limerick.

Stephen Leo is Patricks father I have no birth or death for him. He was a Labourer and lived in Edward St.

I did find a mar in 1866 in Kilmallock County Limerick. but it could be wrong? I have nothing on his wife.

Thank you so much in advance for all your help with this.

    Kind regards

    Fiona

  • Hi Fiona,

you will be able to get the most of the information on irishgenealogy.ie for free.

For records prior to 1864 it would be necessary to use rootsireland which is a paid site that unfortunately I don't have access to.

    I hope this helps.

  •

Hi again Jim, I looked at the 1911 and the 1911 census again. You were correct Mary is on the census with her parents. Patrick and Mary. But they have not written Mary, just Katherine or Kathleen! This is for Limerick.

I’m sure it’s her. Is this a common thing to use the middle name? All the rest is correct and checks out.

So thank you for suggesting this.

    Kind regards

    Fiona
