Hi, I am wondering whether anybody might know if the proceedings of the case against the Gort Whiteboys (late 1832) in Galway would exist today and if so where they could be located. There are quite a few descendants here in Australia who are interested in what was alledged and what witnesses where called. Cheers Mark Doran ( descendant of James Boland , whiteboy)

    Dear Mark,

Great to hear that you are a past-pupil pf the Mercy Sisters. What part of Australia?

I have been communicting with Jacinta Moran, Queensland for some years. Her e-mail address is jacinta001@live.com.au. Perhaps you know her and maybe it was you who sent her the three valuable pages which I'm attaching with this letter. Great details about your ancestor, James Boland.

    Record in the Assizes Court:

"Michael Quinn, John Sheedy, Michael Moran, Patrick Moran, James Boland,. Whiteboy offence, judgement of death recorded". As far as I remember this appeared in Galway Free Press, 31 March 1832..

Another newspaper article reads: "James Boland, Patrick Moran, Michael Moran, James Sheedy and Michael Quinn for the assembling of arms and attacking the house of Martin Glynn (Glinn) in May last. Guilty."

I went to the National Archives in Dublin a few years ago but could not find any further information regarding the trial, March 1832.

Thank God your ancestor was spared the death penalty but it's a shame that an innocent man like him was transported.

Jacinta is still looking for the place of origin in Co. Galway of her ancestor, Patrick Moran. I'm convinced that it was the parish of Ballinakill in south-east Co. Galway.

If at any time you would like my assistance in tracing the ancestors of James Boland, please let me know.

    Keep safe and well,

    de Lourdes.

  • Hi Sr de Lourdes,

Thank you for these extracts I have seen some before but not all. It's a bit disappointing that nothing of the court case is in the archives. On that point I thought it might be more appropriate to use an alternative email address ( supplied by Jacinta) rather than using the message board for any lengthy dialogue. For which I should apologise up but I would like to provide you with some background. When I visited Feakle in 2016 I was absolutely in the dark and somewhat perplexed by the fact that their were only one one or two relatively recent Boland graves in the cemetry. The caretaker explained that it wasn't that uncommon because many were too poor to afford grave markers or tombstones. However later that day I meet a character in the next village who suggested I was looking in the wrong place and that the Bolands were to be found further 'up the Shannon'. That would place them closer to Gort as well as the fact that James' leased plot was in Fahy .. any connection with your family ?  What I would appreciate is some assistance in establishing who his parents were and where the family lived. The Tithe Applotment books have many Boland and Bolan references but its difficult to establish whether its the right family. We know of Francis Snr and James' brothers Michael and Francis Jnr. but how big was the family and who was his mother are questions still unaswered.  Ancestry trees carry a few variations without any supporting evidence. Obviously from his father's petition we know his name was Francis but no evidence of his mothers maiden name or marriage.

    Cheers

    Mark
