Luke O Shaughnessy born In Gort 1835
Looking for ancestors of Luke O Shaughnessy b. 1835, he had one sister Delia b. 1838, they emigrated to America in 1848. His family were from Gort. His parents were John O Shaughnessy and Mary Congaven from Gort, it would be great to get any information on John and Mary or any family member. ANY help would be appreciated as I have hit a dead end.
Thanks Una

Hi Una,
Just to let you know that there is a Facebook page.---O Shaughnessy gathering -Gort County Galway. It should be of interest to you.

Rory O Shaughnessy who was involved with I.R.O..in the past is one of the organizers of The O Shaughnessy gathering in Gort and surrounding areas. They plan to meet in Gort in 2021.
Rory has also done research into the O Shaughnessy families. Sr.DeLourdes' a genealogist in Gort has written a book on the parish of Kiltartan called
Kiltartan, Many Leaves One Root. A history of the parish of Kiltartan.
I also attach an article on the history of the O Shaughnessy and Cromwellian war.

I have found nothing on Findmypast.ie for any of the names John, Mary, Luke, or Delia.

Hi Una,
I have a quick look through Sister DeLourdes book where she lists a number of O Shaughnessys from burial records including a John O Shaughnessy from 1804 date of death. The townland is not recorded although it is in Kiltartan.
Would I be correct in assuming that since the two children, Luke and Delia, were aged 13 and 10 when they went to the States that their parents went with them?
They would have left at the height of the famine.
Regards

Hi Anne, Thank you so much for replying. It is a great new lead. John and Delia travelled with their parents (Luke and Mary) to America and then moved to Minnesota. I am hoping to go to the Gathering next year in Gort. I am guessing that Luke's father was John, I thought he might be born around 1790? But it could have been earlier...I found a Mary Shaughnessy from Gort who died in 1871 aged 96 and thought she might be related.... It is hard to imagine, given the family name and it's strong connection with Gort that there isn't some distant relative living in Gort today... it's just finding that missing link. Thanks again for your generous help.

Correction to my previous post. Delia father was John, not Luke.
