  • Hi Shawneena, my husband's 2nd great-grandmother was Bridget Keaveny from Galway.  I did know the name of the Townland but right now I can't remember it.  I will have to ask a cousin and get back  to you with the name.  Bridget was born 16 Feb 1837 to Mark Keaveny and Mary Donland.  They were born about 1815 and I have Knockmoyleen as Mark's place of birth.  I believe that is in Galway but I'm not sure. Mark and Mary had 5 children, that I know of:  Bridget, Michael, James, Patrick, and Honor.  The birth years I have are 1837 - 1855.  I don't have birth years for Patrick and Honor.  The birth place I have for James is Englishtown, Glenamaddy, Galway.  Bridget came to the USA on 23 Jun 1854.  She lived in Boston, Massachusetts, USA and married Patrick Cray (Creigh in Ireland) on 8 Feb 1857.  They had 8 children.  Is this the same family you are researching?  I would love to hear from you and learn if it is the same family.  I believe there is still family in Ireland, probably in Galway

  • Hi Shawneena.

https://www.johngrenham.com/findasurname.php?surname=Keaveney  is a website I have found helpful to position relatives who have not sent a forwarding address.  They should have known I would be looking for them!

This site will show those listed on the Griffiths Valuation (1847-1864).  There are none for Galway but the counties either side (Mayo & Offaly) have 5. Remember that this was a time of being poor and the Griffiths only show those owning or renting properties over an acre.

The 1901 & 1911 Censuses can be reached through this site and show surname distribution.  There are a large number for Galway.  There are also Roman Catholic records.

My next suggestion would be ' https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp. where there are 558 births, 214 marriages and 626 deaths listed.

The following site lists the Registration districts of each county and will help with the above site.

    https://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Ireland-civil-registration.html

Galway: Ballinasloe, Ballinrobe, Clifden, Galway, Glenamaddy, Gort, Loughrea, Mountbellew, Oughterard, Portunna, Roscommon, Scarriff, Tuam.

Offaly (King’s): Edenderry, Mountmellick, Parsonstown (Birr), Roscrea, Tullamore.

Mayo: Ballina, Ballinrobe, Belmullet, Castlebar, Castlereagh, Claremorris, Killala, Newport (included in Westport after 1886), Swineford, Westport.

There is also a two part map showing the locations of the Registration districts.  Unfortunately you may have to print out both and join them together as the above are on both halves.

I hope this gives you some further sites to check out.  Good luck with your search.

I am still trying to find out which flying saucer mine came to Australia on as I can find no records of them.

  • Shawneena:

My husband and I visited Glenamaddy (County Galway) last summer and were assisted by volunteers at the Glenamaddy Boyounagh Heritage Project.  In fact, a Mr. Patrick Keaveny showed us where my ancestors lived.  You can contact them at glenamaddyheritage.com or email gbhp.info@gmail.com  They have done extensive research on the people in that area.

I recall him telling us that there were many Keavenys in the area.  He said there is another spelling for the name, i.e., Keaveney.

    Good luck,
