Hello from Scotland. Looking for help to find my great great grandmother Catherine Ryan's (actual birthdate and her mother's name and birthdate) who married my gg grandad, Lawrence Dickinson in St Michael's RC Chapel, Limerick in 1879. In the 1901 and 1911 Limerick Census she is 3 years older than Lawrence making her birth year 1856. Then her death certificate states that when she died on 3 May 1915 in Limerick she was 51 years when in fact she should have been 59 years according to the census details. Also Catherine is known as Mary Catherine, Catherine M, kat, Kathleen.
On their marriage certificate it tells us she had been living in Cecil Street, her dad was William Ryan, a builder and her sister Charlotte was a witness.
I really would appreciate help in these 2 areas as I am struggling.

best wishes
Ann.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and found three possibilities for Catherine, however, I did not find any Charlotte Ryan baptismal records anywhere in Co. Limerick with a father William. I limited the search for Catherine to the five RC parishes in Limerick city.

  • Hi Ann,

My name is John Dickinson. My Great Grandfather was Thomas Dickinson brother of Lawrence. Both lived in Limerick  and were sons of William Dickinson Crosby Lancashire England. I am guessing that there was an Alphonsus in your family tree but may be wrong. Please message if you wish.

  • Hello John.

I think we may are related, my name is Angela nee Dickinson. daughter of Glennon Lawrence Dickinson.

Son of Alphonsous Dickinson and Elizabetheth Kennedy.

I have found you by searching the Dickinson name.

I have only just began my family search last week.

When I came across the family search tree site

Here I have found John Clancy a third cousin related to us by our Great Grandparents.

He has created a family tree very extentive and interesting, this can be vewied.

To get our family hstory I would recommend searching the above site,

I am now in liasons with Fergus as well.

I would be very glad if you wish to keep in contact

  • Hi Angela,

Thank you for your reply. Almost missed it. Yes distant relatives for sure. Most of the family seem to originate from Lawrence (sometimes spelt Laurence) and Thomas with connections now to Scotland, Wales, UK and America. I put my DNA through myHeritage with 12,500 matches so far albeit mostly pretty distant. I have had contact with a relative from Limerick and she has done a 40 page document detailing the history of the Dickinsons going back to the mid 1850's. An amazing piece of work it charts both Lawrences and Thomas's families up to present. Everything from marriage certificates, newspaper clippings to pictures of my parents which absolutely amazed me. Ancestry and myHeritage throw up some amazing pieces of information. I know my father went to Somerset House in the 1940's trying to find information without success and now most of it is only a few Google searches away. Always good to know where one originates from.

    Hi All,

Its quite interesting. From having almost zero information I am almost overwhelmed now. It would appear that there is a great deal of family left around. Some may know of a Blane Dickinson (Youtube and online) who messaged me awhile back with this "My late father was Robert Gerrard Dickinson… son of Alfred Dickinson". So lots descended from Lawrences side of the family.

  • Hi John,

    Apoligies firstly,

I had not realised I had typed the name John, I meant Fergus Clancy, he lives in Dublin.

Fergus and your self are third cousins to my Father once removed from me.

He has provided the following info,

I share GG grandparents with your father, Glennon Lawerence Dickinson. I attach a tree generated from familysearch.org and, by selecting each person in the online tree you can go back a further generation for John Frawley and Anne Bethel.

At first I was a little confused when I found Mary Anne Wallace in the 1901 census with my great grandmother Ellen Clancy nee Frawley from the family of Limerick sandmen. This was because there are a number of Wallace connections to the Clancys. However, Mary Anne was recorded as Ellen's niece. With a bit of searching I found that Mary Anne was born in Limerick workhouse April 1889, to a Bridget Frawley, a month before she married James Wallace. Hence I discovered the existence of Bridget, born 1867. In 1901, while Mary Anne was living with Ellen, Bridget and her son Martin were living with James in Belfast when he was working as a Quay labourer,  I understand that her marriage to James Wallace was not a good one. Mary Anne married Thomas Dickinson in 1912 and Alphonsus was born in 1913. Thomas's father Lawrence was from Lancashire. He worked as a compositor in Limerick and had married Kathleen Ryan in 1879. Mary Anne and Thomas moved to Glasgow sometime after the last birth in 1929 and she died there aged 106. Alphonsus was an insurance agent and he married Elizabeth Kennedy in Limerick, 1936.

Mary Anne Dickinson nee Wallace followed her 4 daughters to Glasgow

Thomas Dickinson a former owner of Riddler’s Bar, Sarsfield St. Limerick.

    I am originally from Glasgow.

Hoping we can keep in touch

    Best wishes

    Angela
