My grandmother Delia Cecilia Bannon left Kinvara in 1885 to emigrate to Queensland, Auastralia.  Her two sisters, Kate-Anne Bannon and Ellen Bannon, stayed in Kinvara.  Kate-Anne married Martin O'Grady in 1898 and Ellen married Richard Burke in 1891.  I am wondering if any of their descendants are still in Kinvara or nearby.  The O'Grady family was well known through their association with Mountain View. 

I have visited Kinvara several times and have written a book about Delia, my namesake.

As her grand-daughter, I would love to hear from any locals who are connected to her or her family.

    Thanks for your message. I'm not sure how much you know already about the Burke family - I located them on the 1901 census in the town of Kinvara, http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Kinvarra/Kiltartan__Barony_/1385302/. Richard's occupation, relieving officer, agrees with their 1891 marriage record.

    A death notice for their youngest daughter Ellie appeared in the Tuam Herald on December 7, 1929 - DIED Nov. 27, 1929, at Kinvara, Ellie Burke, youngest daughter of Ellen and the late Richard Burke, The Square, Kinvara. Ellen's death notice appeared in the Irish Independent on September 28, 1949: BURKE (Kinvara) - Sept. 21, 1949, at her residence, The Square, Kinvara, Ellen, relict of Richard Burke; deeply regretted. R.I.P. Interred at Mount Cross Cemetery. American papers, please copy.

    A Paddy Burke of The Square, Kinvara, is listed as a member of the Kinvara Company in 1916 and may be a member of this family: https://theburrenandbeyond.com/1916-kinvaragortkilcolganpeterswellardrahan/.

    I am familar with the Burke family on the 1901 census but I did not know about the two deaths nor about Paddy being in the Kinvara Company.

    Do you know if there are any relatives of Ellen and Richard Burke still living in Kinara or elsewhere?

  • Hi Delia

    In your research, did you come across a BRIDGET BURKE born c.1852 in Kinvara?  I cannot say with certainty who her parents were but I think it was Joseph Burke and Surney Gibbon.  Bridget left Kinvara about 1871/72 and married a ROBERT WILLIAMS a merchant seaman.  They settled in Caernafon, Wales, and then Liverpool.

    I am desperate to trace Bridget's ancestors as she was my husband's great grandmother.

    Any help you can give would be very much appreciated.
