My 2x GGM Louise Merigan (born 1866 England) was the daughter of my 3x GGF Michael Merigan/Merrigan (born around 1833 Ballinleenty ??, Tipperary Ireland) and he was the son of my 4x GGF Patrick Merigan/Merrigan (born 1821 Ballinleenty, Tipperary) and he was the son of 5x GGF Michael Merigan/Merrigan (born 1773 Ballinleenty, Tipperary) and he was the son of my 6x GGF Michael Merigan/Merrigan (born 1744 Bansha, Tipperary) and he was the son of my 7x GGF Michael Merigan/Merrigan Sr (born 1723 Bansha, Tipperary). Attached is a document I found on Ancestry.com when my 3x GGF Michael applied to be a licensed Victualler in London, England. I think the document says Ballinleenty in Tipperary???  I joined this group because I saw the name Merrigan and thought I might be on the right track to narrowing this down. This Summer, I will be traveling to Ireland and would love to visit where my family came from :) Any help is appreciated. Jennifer

  • Hi Jennifer,

The Tithe Applotments (free at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) have 3 Merigans in Ballinleenty townland - John, Michael & Patrick in 1830; parish is Clonpet. There are also 6 Merrigans in Ballinleinty - parish is Lattin

The cemetery for Ballinleenty is St Michael's Tipperary Town

Griffiths Valuation (free at  http://www.askaboutireland.ie/) also has 7 Merrigans in Ballinleenty parish Clonpet; so Ballinleenty is a Townland in Clonpet Parish

Ballinleenty borders the following other townlands:

  • Hello Jennifer,

For several years I have been helping a friend research her Irish ancestors. Her great great grandmother was Ellen Merrigan from Ballinleenty who  married John Finnan on 14th February, 1797 at St Michael's Tipperary town. The information we have from a Merrigan family member who still has land at Ballinleenty says that Ellen Merrigan's father was Michael Merrigan born 1744 and died 28th March, 1821. Ellen's siblings were Michael, John, William and Patrick.

My friend's ancestors, Mathew Finnan and his wife Eliza O'Doherty left Ballinleenty soon after their marriage in 1853.

  • Hello Jennifer,

Jane O'Halloran from IrelandXO asked me to look into your query some time ago and I've only just got around to it! Sorry! The first thing I want to say is I have little knowledge of the area, coming as I do from the Northern part of the county  - some 50 miles away.  I se also from the other posts here that you are getting some good leads in your quest.  Attached to this message are some files you may find useful - they give some maps and information on the locality.  I also found Census Returns for 1901 for the two townlands you mentioned - Ballinleenty has two Merrigan families residing in the area - Files attached.  I also have the 1911 Census returns for the same two families - also attached.  While one of the documents attached has some information on the townlands in question with some small maps, I took the liberty of compiling the townlands map from the Historic 6inch Colour Map viewable on the Ordnance Survey of Ireland website www.osi.ie. Hopefully these will help in some small way.
