thankdMy ggg grandfather James Sterling born 1783 who served in the Royal Artillery married a lady Mereels. 
I can't find any more info on Mereels. It has been said that we have Frence  Huegonot ancestors so I'm wondering if this name is french or derived from French. My ancestor probably would have served during Napoleonic Wars  during the early 1800's. This could also be a French connection.

  • The surname Mereels is unknown in Ireland so far as I can tell. (There are none in the 1901 census for example).  There’s about 80 Morrell, and many of them are Presbyterian (which is what many Huguenot refugees became after they settled in Ireland. Presbyterianism being quite close to the Calvinist beliefs of the Huguenots. That might be the name you are looking for,

  • Hi John and Elwyn, another possible version is Murrell, there are very few in the census mainly RC in Kerry, another census either 1901 or 1911 a Murrell family in Longford, ex mo,Italy as is one in Kerry, along way from 1800 especially as total numbers do not exceed 20. 

    Fifty years ago I worked with a man of that name who was always referred to as Murrells.
