Help me on my search

Your information is very scarce . .  . so . . when we search . . . we are just guessing . . . with the tools available to us . . . 

So . . . the Bible  . . tells of a James McKeogh (no date) . . address . . .looks like. . 

Mount ( Phillips ?? ) . . NEWPORT ( see map below ) County Tipperary . . . 

I failed in my search . . to find any reference to a Mount Phillips in Ireland

NEWPORT . . . is still a small town . . sitting on the Tipperary / Limerick County Borders . . . ( a very scenic area )

So . . I searched for a James McKeogh . . on a search engine . . Roots (paid) . . address Newport.Co.Tipperary

I found two possible hits . . . searching a BIRTH . . between 1830 +/- 10 years    ..( i,e, 1820 - 1840 )  see File (1) below

I did the same search . . . between 1810 +/- 10 years . . (i.e. 1800 - 1820 ) . . . Nothing for the Newport area. . .

Searching . . .a TAX roll . . a.k.a  . . Tithes Applotment ( 1826 ) for McKeogh ( Newport area ) (see 5 below )

the name JAMES McKeogh occurs . . as shown . . .

Next I searched for an ANN(e) McKeogh .. and found ONE possible hit ( see below )

Born 1839 . . . registered in Newport . . . ( which might fit the time scale )

Next I searched for a Marriage  . . .circa 1860 . . . to a RYAN . . . No results . . .

Other observation . . . when I searched in Ireland for a Mount (Phillips ?) . . I found nothing . . 

but I did notice that there is such an address in Australia . . .

So Steven . . . nothing for sure . . in the above . . but . . . it possibly will give you a few leads to your own search . .

Many thanks for your post.  Eamonn has given you some good leads and I will follow this up with some of the Newport area volunteers.  

I checked the LandedEstatesDatabase and MountPhilips is indeed a place name and a house (which no longer exists).  It was part of the Phillips estate in Mountphillips townnland in Kilvellane.  Here is the link:

You can view the location of the property on the Google Maps link on the page.  In the meantime, I'm not a local person, but there are other volunteers who will be able to add further information to this post.

Hi,

Mount Phillips is indeed in the Newport area. Ryan and McKeogh are two of the most common surnames in the area. The headstone inscriptions transciptions from the four graveyards in the area - Ballymakeogh, Cragg, Killnarath and Birdhill are available on www.tipperarystudies.ie . There are also Newport burials in Murroe and Abington Co Limerick. These have all been uploaded to rootsireland.ie also. There is a local historial group - Newport Historical & Archaeological Society - who can be contacted through their facebook page. Parish registers for the parish can be viewed in registers.nli.ie and are also transcibed on Rootsireland.ie 

The Nenagh Guardian is the local newspaper for the area and its archives go back to 1838. 

'Dear Old Newport Town' is a famous local song and the famous Clare Glens is located close to the town
