This story begins with John O’Donnell's , who was born on the 1st of August 1866 in Turkenagh, Kilkeedy, Inchiquin, Clare, Irelandfirst marriage . John married Rose Lantry Martin the widow of Lawrence Martin of Camus Meelick, Portumna, Galway,. Rose inherited the Camus property in 1893 though her husband’s will in 1893, Lawrence had died in 1890. John and Rose were wed in Eyrecourt, Eyrecourt, Portumna, Galway, Ireland on the 29th of April 1892.

Now Rose who was born in Esker, Ballinasloe, Galway about 1863 died on the 9th of May 1901 in Camus Meelick, Portumna, Galway.

Attached please find Rose’s death registration;

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

The children we are researching now are as follows:

1.      Bridget O Donnell was born on February 27, 1894, to Rose Lantry, age 31, and John O'Donnell, age 27 in Camus.

2.      Annie O Donnell was born on April 14, 1895, to Rose Lantry, age 32, and John O'Donnell, age 28.

3.      Martin O Donnell was born on September 2, 1897, to Rose Lantry, age 34, and John O'Donnell, age 31.

4.      Nora O'Donnell was born on the 27 of January 1901 with disablities and died on the 15th of October,1903 due to her disabilities.

Now from the 1901 Census of Ireland we know all four children were living in Camus with their father John and their mother Rose, who would die the following month.  John O'Donnell married Bridget Early in Eyrecourt, Portumna, Galway, Ireland, on January 29, 1902, when he was 35 years old. Bridget who was born the 10th of Oct 1876, in Muckanagh, Portumna, Galway was unmarried and living in Derry, Meelick, Galway when they wed, now when we look at the 1911 Census of Ireland none of Rose and John’s children are living in the house in Camus. Five of John and Bridget’s children are living there along with Bridget’s widowed mother and six of Bridget’s siblings.

Below is the Marriage registration for John and Bridget

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1902/10265/5736163.pdf

Now, in 1911 We find John’s daughter Bridget living in Kiltormer, West, Kiltomer, Galway. With the Campbell family and is listed as a servant age 17 (the Campbells might be related to Bridget). Her brother Martin is living in Esker, Kilmacshane. Galway, with the Silks family at age 14 and listed as a servant (again possible family connection). Then we find their sister Anne age 16 as a pupil at the Industrial School on Society Street in Ballinasloe in the 1911 Census.

There are probably two possible reasons why Bridget, Mary and Martin were no longer living in Camas, the first could have been they did not like their stepmother or the new wife did not want the children of a previous marriage living with them to move in her mother and siblings.

Margaret Frances O'Donnell was born on the 14th of November 1913, to Bridget Early, age 37, and John O'Donnell, age 47. Margaret who was Michael Anthony Redden’s mother. Bridget, Martin and Anne were her step siblings

After the 1911 Census we cannot find any additional information on these three siblings Bridget, Martin and Anne. I have looked at the civil registrations for possible marriages or deaths, but with a surname of O’Donnell trying to narrow down the documentation is difficult.

Now the Redden connection here is that Margaret Frances O; Donnell the widow of John Briscoe of Kilmore, Eyrecourt Galway married Patrick Bernard Redden born on the 13h of April 1911 in Clonkelagh, Munigbaun, Kilquain, Co Galway, Ireland, were wed in December of 1948 in Longrea

  • My mother, Rose Ann O'Donnell was born to Bridget O'Donnell in November of 1912.  She didn't know who her father was and was always embarrassed even as an older woman.  Could it possibly be one of the Campbells.  Anyway,  Anna O'Donnell Muirhead (Aunt Anna) passed away about 1966 in Connecticut and Martin O'Donnell lived in New Jersey (USA), married and had 3 children also passed away probably in the 1960s..He was my godfather.  Aunt Anna never remarried after her husband passed.  My mother Rose Ann (aka Daisy) grew up in a convent because her mother couldn't keep her but she did see her through the years,  I believe Bridget passed away in 1952 in Ireland.  My mother Rose Ann moved to England, married, had a son and her husband was killed in World War !!..  Rose Ann and her son Michael moved to New York after the war, probably 1946 and she married my father whom she met during the war in England.  I was born in 1950.  Rose Ann (Daisy) passed away in 1996.  I didn't know Bridget.  I did know Aunt Anna and Uncle Martin.  I also know that my mother loved her mother Bridget very much.

  • You didn't find information on Anna or Martin because they moved to the United States.  My mother Rose Ann told me that her mother Bridget was a great cook and worked in the castles in Ireland. My mother also took my brother and I to England and Ireland in 1959 (I was 9 and my brother 17) and we were there for all of July and August.  We stayed with many relatives in England and Ireland and I remember my mother saying we stayed with cousins. We were there for two months and never stayed in a hotel.   Aunt Anna was also there part of the time in Ireland.  She made a trip every year to Ireland and Scotland.  I remember hearing her husband's family was in Scotland.  My mother also made another trip there around 1979 or 1980 with here grandson Michael. (Michael's son)

  • Rose Anne O"Donnell was born on the 23rd of November 1912 at the Portumna No.1 , Portumna, Galway, Ireland and as you pointed out the father is not mentioned in the borth Registration..

See attached link to her Civil Registration:

Now from my files Bridget was born on the 27th of February, 1894 in Camas, Longford, Meelick, Portumna, Galway, Ireland. Her parents were Rose Lantry Martin O'Donnell and John O'Donnell , This was Rose's 2nd Marriage and John's first Marriage.. Bridget's mother Rose died on the 9th of  May 1901. On the 29th of January 1902 John O'Donnell marries Bridget Early in Faye, Eyrecourt, Portuna, Galway, Ireland. This is John's  second marriage, From what I am seeing it appears that John;s second wife was not fond of  the children from his previous marriage. In loolking at the 1911 Census the only children living with John and Bridget are the children from that marriage. This means that Bridget was  only 17 or younger when she left her parental hpme and went to work for the Campbells.

The Birth registration indicates that Bridget was 18 Years nine months and three days old when Rose was born. In the Work House. Clearly the Caampells must have tossed her out and her family would not take her in.either leaving her no choice but to go to the Work House. There has to be a story hear and I know my Cousin Martina in Galway will want all of the details

Your Aunt Anne O'Donnell Muirhead married Alexnder Muirjrad on the 2nd of  April, 1924 in Manhattan, New York, New York, USA, They worked at the Yacht Club in Rye, Westchester, New York, USA. They lived in Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut, USA, which is just north of Rye. Annie died there on the 23rd of July, 1965

Martin O'Dpnnell arrived in New York, on the 29th of  November 1927. He married Anna Kaplafka on the 22nd of Jube 1930, In Newark, Essex, New Jersey, USA Theyhad 2 children Barabara and  Robert Martin Died on the  25 h  of January,1960 in Vauxhall, Union, New Jersey, USA Anna on the 22nd of July, 2008 in Oxford, Warren, New Jersey, USA

I have much more for you and if you will send an email to me at jaeger_frederick@yahoo.com. I can give you more details
