Hello Members, I have been trying to trace if there is a family line connection to Thomas MacDonagh, born 1878 and died 1916. We were told there was a connection by Redmond Patrick Mitchell, son of Margaret MacDonagh and Peter Mitchell. The person, Margaret MacDonagh, was born 12 July 1881 in Kings county, in Philipstown. Her father was Michael MacDonagh and her mother was Alice Ryan. She married Peter Mitchell at Philipstown; he was an apprentice tailor in the 1901 and 1911 Ireland Census. Margeret MacDonagh and Peter Mitchell emigrated to Montreal, Quebec, Canada in July 1911 on the ship, Ionian. The connection must be through Thomas MacDonagh's uncles or grand uncles, but I am having difficulty finding records showing a Michael MacDonagh. Could you help me with this search? Thank you, Kevin O'Keefe, Lindsay, Ontario, Canada.

  • Hi Kevin, you say.............
I have been trying to trace if there is a family line connection to Thomas MacDonagh, born 1878 and died 1916. We were told there was a connection by Redmond Patrick Mitchell, son of Margaret MacDonagh and Peter Mitchell.

Thomas McDonagh.............................where was he when he died?
Redmond Mitchell..................... what year was he born and where?

I had done quite a lot of records for you, we had an outage and screen went blank.
Margaret was born born in 1875 listed under Edenderry.
The marriage to Peter Mitchell is listed as Hitchel.
You can get all your info from this site.

Oh Peter Mitchell in the census it says he was from Dublin........Father was Patrick and Mother's maiden name is Short.
Michael McDonagh was from Galway and Alicia/Alice was from Bllingarry Tipperary as this was where they married.
Let me know about Thomas and Redmond please.

  • Hello Margot,

Thank you for this information. The 'Thomas McDonagh......where was he when he died?'  is the person in the1916 Rising and killed at Kilmainham Jail on 3 May.

For 'Redmond [Patrick] Mitchell....... what year was he born and where?'. Redmond Mitchell was the first child born in Lindsay Ontario Canada on 23 February 1915, after they emigrated to Canada in 1911.

Peter Mitchell and Margaret MacDonagh had their first child, Alice, in Philipstown, Ireland in 1910. After they emigrated to Canada they had Redmond Mitchell in 1915 and a second daughter, Gertrude Mitchell, in 1918.

Also, The 1911 Ireland Census at  Philipstown lists Margaret MacDonagh's brother Patrick living with them. He was 38 years old.

    Sorry to be confusing.

    Hi Margot,

Yes, I do mean this Thomas MacDonagh?

.......I looked for the marriage of Margaret McDonagh and Peter Mitchell.
Says her father was Michael., not Joseph...Yes, Margot you are correct.

I have uploaded Margaret McDonagh's death certificate. It shows the Irish locations on it.

She was related to Thomas MacDonagh but I'm having difficulty finding the connection. Her son, Redmond [Patrick] Mitchell' told me in 1978 this but I forget the connection.

  • Hi Kevin,
I have searched for Redmond Patrick Mitchell, I could not find him, I went another way and I just found him, listed as Redward.
Joseph MacDonagh (Thomas' father) when he married Mary Parker it stated his fathers name as Patt.
They were both in Kings county at the time of the marriage in 1868.
A tree in a site confirms this and says Joseph was born in Kilglass, County Roscommon.
It's a bit harder to find siblings, but it will take me a bit of time.

  • Hi Margot,

Thank you for looking at this for me! The Redmond Patrick Mitchell, son of Margaret McDonagh and Peter Mitchell, was born in Lindsay Ontario, Canada in 1915.

His relation to Thomas Stanislaus MacDonagh (IrishTomás Anéislis Mac Donnchadha; 1 February 1878 – 3 May 1916)  must be through a grand uncle or great grand uncle.

    What do you think?

  • Hi Kevin,
After a wide search, I can not find anything that would connect as records are hard to find.
I did see Thomas McDonagh had a daughter and she married a guy his surname was Redmond.
I have asked Jane to pass on my email address to you. I do have some records.
    Cheers
