My grandfather, THomas Kearns was born in the Gurane area in the 1880's. Would appreciate any information on family still in the area.

Unfortunately we volunteers are not permitted to give out information regarding family members still living so I can't help you with that but if this is your Thomas I will be happy to search for his siblings, parents' marriage and births etc

  • Col,

So Sorry for the delayed reply. Yes, Thomas is my grandfather and Peter and Catherine, his parents. We've been over to Ireland a few times and were able to locate his birthplace and I believe his parents' grave in Ballyhaunis. Also heard of his kin, Paddy Kearns, who had sold his home in Gurane to a younger man named Doyle. Would love any help you might be able to offer. We plan our next trip over in April-May 2020. Keep me informed if you have any luck.

    Many warm regards and thanks,

    Bob (Kearns, Forde) Walsh

  • Col,

Many thanks, I had overlooked the detail of their move to Certain! We've been by the area a few times and will divert over that way in May. Any other suggestions would be welcome.

    Regards,

    Bob and Kathleen

  • Hi Bob,
Your Thomas was my grandmothers uncle. If you are in Ireland and still in the area, or still due to come to the vicinity, please call to the old Kearns house. I would be delighted to meet you. I had heard Thomas was in the States, in New Jersey, with his brothers Peter and James. Pat died young on arrival to the States from pneumonia. Their three sisters were married and raised large families in the Ballyhaunis area. Michael remained in the homeplace and became my great grandfather.

  • Hi Pat,

So delighted to hear from you. We have been locked down here in New Mexico. Our plans had included a trip to Iteland in April and May, but that was cancelled due to the virus. I hope this message finds you and your family well.

Can't describe my joy in connecting with relatives who are still in Ireland. My grandfather Thomas, married  Margaret Kearns from Loughrae in New York in 1925. They had 2 girls, Teresa, my mom and a younger sister Eileen.I knew my uncle Peter who you mentioned. Brother Patrick is buried with Thomas and Margaret Kearns in Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn. Tom passed in 1957, Margaret in 1964. We were in Ballyhaunis and even went out to Gurrane last spring and the spring of 2018. Found what we thaought was the Kearns home in 2018, with a local telling us the house had been sold to the "Doyle"boy by Paddy Kearns. We were not sure if this was the home. We hope to be back in Ireland as soon as things are safe and would very much appreciate meeting you and your family. Sorry for the delay in responding, I sometimes neglect things out of sight and  the virus drama and sadness surrounding our cancelled trip just resulted in my disengagingseveral things.

FYI- I am 69, grew up until age 17 in Brooklyn then moved to NM for college. I've lived here since. Married in 86 with 2 children. I do have a nice picture of Thomas, if you send me your email address I'll forward it and  a few others for you to enjoy.

    Best regards,

    Bob
