  • Hello, Tim and welcome.

What relationship or connection do Michael McCarthy, Mary Berraine and Dennis and Catherine Patten have to each other?

Was Berraine Mary's maiden name? Do you have an approximate year of birth for her?

Did Dennis and Catherine Patten remain in Ireland for the rest of their lives?

  • Possible deaths of Dennis and Catherine Patten on Ireland Genealogy.ie     https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie

Both deaths were registered in Achill District, Westport Superintendent Registrar's District.

Denis Patten age 70 ; married; farmer;   Date & place of death: 29th Nov. 1889,  Valley;  Informant:  John Patten, son, residence Valley.

Catherine Patton age 74;  widow;  farmer's widow;  Date & place of death: 1st May 1892, Valley;  Informant: Bridget Gallagher, daughter, residence Valley.

There were deaths of other women called Catherine Patten.

Achill was in Newport Superintendent Registrar's District until 1886 when it became part of Westport Superintendent Registrar's district.

I couldn't locate a townland or any other place in Achill called Valley.  https://www.swilson.info

This looks like the marriage of Bridget, the daughter who registered her mother, Catherine's death:

Superintendent Registrar's District of Westport;  Registration District of Achill;  R.C. Chapel Dukinella;  18th Oct. 1891

John Gallagher age 24  and Bridget Patten age 26.  Residence of both was Tonatanvally.  Bridget's father was Denis.

The residence of "Valley" on the death registrations of Denis and Catherine may be an abbreviation of Tonatanvally.

These townlands were listed for Achill on 1901 census:  Bunacurry, Cashel, Dooniver, Salia and Tonatanvally. There were Patten households in all except Dooniver townland.  Gallagher was a common surname in Achill.  No Beraine.

Griffiths Valuation had 60+ entries for Patten in Achill. Some of them may have been renting more than 1 parcel of land.  There were more townlands in Achill than on 1901 census.  No McCarthy or Carthy entries in Achill. There was a Bernard McCarthy in Newport Town in Burrishoole Parish and other McCarthy/Carthy in other places.  No matches for Beraine.

Beraine may have been a variant of a number of another surname.  117 variants using Soundex and 86 using Metaphone through surname search option on  https://www.swilson.info/surnamesrch.php

  • Thanks for explaining how the names in your first post fit together.

To recap: Michael McCarthy, his wife, Mary (Berraine) and their children, including Peter, were in Boston by the early 1870s.  Peter married Mary Patten, who was a daughter of Dennis & Catherine Patten. Dennis and Catherine remained in Ireland.

Did they all put just Ireland as place of birth on census returns and death records and obituaries? Is there any evidence that Mary Patten knew the McCarthy or Berraine family before emigration?

Is there anything to link Michael McCarthy or Mary Berraine to Mayo, apart from the results of your DNA test?

Were they all Catholic?  Registers for Achill R.C. parish exist continuously only from 1867.  There are a few marriages from a collection of parishes in 1820s.

"Valley", the residence of Dennis and Catherine Patten written on their death registrations is Tonatanvally. It's a local, English name for the place.

Recollections, stories and legends of folk in Tonatanvally are in Dublin University's Schools Collection compiled in 1930s.  One informant was a Mrs Bridget Gallagher. https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4497767/4344489

There was large-scale emigration from Achill in the early 1880s in an assisted emigration scheme, following the 1879 famine.  Blacksod Sailings www.blacksodbayemigration.ie

There is an old post (2013) "Patrick Gallagher, Tonatanvally, Achill"  on the message board.  Reading replies to it may be helpful.

  • Hi Maggie May,

Either I have forgotten family stories,, or never heard them. I  lives near my grandparents on my father’s side , growing up. That was Peter McCarthy’s youngest daughter Ellen Francis McCarthy (Lee).  I knew Her older sister Mary Helene McCarthy in my late teens. They were Irish, but did not talk about it. They were American.  3 of Peters sisters changed their sur name to “Carthy” and were maids in Boston’s back bay, for the Wealthy people.  In later years I tried to get stories about the family and no one wanted to talk. Peter , at least 2 of sisters, Grandmother Ellen & Mary all suffered demented in their later years. Ellen was combative and Mary docilel, In my Early twenties I would visit Mary in the nursing home, She thought she was in her twenties at that point and would ask about different family members. Then I would ask my grandfather and he confirmed the answer. The Boston Police Strike of 1919, divided the McCarthy family

They were all Catholic.   Of Ireland, I asked an Aunt where in Ireland the family originated and she thought Roscommon and another letter said Cork as she really did not know.

Michael and Peter were carpenters, Michael fell of a roof and was paralyzed and lived about 2 years after the fall., before he died

I  understand that Peter met Mary Patten in Boston.  They were married 25 Nov 1875 in Boston, Mary Helene McCarthy was born 30 Oct 1875.

My DNA the more specific places. Connacht, Ireland’ North Connacht, South Mayo, Achill Island, Achill Island was the only place listed and circled the rest were just circled. So the Patten’s must have a stronger DNA.
