I am a descendant of James O'Malley (b.1859) and Mary E. O'Malley (maiden name is O'Malley) (b.1862). They are my Great Grandparents

I am told we are from Swinford and that they were both born in Ireland, and came to America in the 1870s or so.

That is about the only verifiable information I have about them in Ireland.

They were married in 1884 and lived in Brooklyn New York USA. They had 11 children, including John Francis O'Malley. my grandfather.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland for baptismal records in the Swinford/Kilconduff RC parish records. (As an aside civil registration of births started in 1864). I located an 1859 James O'Malley record and an 1862 Mary O'Malley record. However, there were a number of O'Malley records in the parish. Do you have their death records which might show their parents names so we can confirm these two records?

  • Hello Roger,

I am thrilled to get a response so soon!

Unfortunately, I do not have their death certificates, but, this information gives me greater enthusiasm to pursue them. I'll contact New York City records in Mahattan.

Mary's middle initial was "E" which could be in honor of her mother, Ellen....maybe.

I'm sending photo of the O'Malley gravestone, which in Holy Cross cemetery in Brooklyn, NY USA.

    THANK YOU so much,

PS...what does Sponsor / Informant refer to?...

  • Hi Roger,

I finally received a death cert. for my Great Grandfather, James O'Malley...

it may have given me more questions than answers!!! As it turns out, the death certificate lists his mother as Mary McCarthy and his father as John O'Malley.

It lists his age as 61 in 1926 (year he died)...BUT, the family gravestone, in New York, lists his age as 68!

On USA census reports, he immigrated in 1872...another says 1870

My next move is to try to access a marriage cert. in New York.

    All The Best,

    Jamess

  • James:

So the baptismal record I located is the correct record. Mary Carty and Mary McCarthy would be the same person. Regarding his age, the gravestone is only a year off and likely the informant for the death record, didn't know his exact age.

  • Hi Roger,

    Yes!!..your discovery was correct!!...Thanks!

Although, the age difference is 7 years apart...61 years old compared to 68 years old at time of death...

I'd like to think the same as you (typo)...I can't imagine that the gravestone would have it wrong..(although, I guess, it happens on the rarest of occasions)

So, He's from Rabawn Parish, Kilconduff, Swinford, County Mayo....She's from Castlebawn Parish, KIlconduff, Swinford, County Mayo

The Mother's and Father's are, presumably, correct!

I'm sending for a marriage record soon...I think James and Mary were married in the states around 1880 or 84.

(as far as I can tell, they got to the USA around 1870...and they were, both, young)

    Thanks, Again,

    James

  • Hi Roger,

I haven't found too much information on Castlebawn or Rabawn parishes...do you know how far apart they were from each other?

How large a village was Swinford back in those days?
