Hi

I am new to this community and was wondering if anyone out there can help me to break down a major brickwall in my family history research. and was wondering if anyone out there can help me to break down a major brickwall in my family history.

My G-G Grandfather James Towey, his wife Catherine and all of their children came to live in England sometime between 1841 and 1851. I found them on the 1851 census and several others afterwards but all it says on these censuses is that they were born in County Mayo. My interest in this family is my G- Grandmother Catherine Towey born c 1840 in County Mayo.

I do not have any idea of a parish at all. All of the family were born in County Mayo the last child being Ann Born 1844.

Hoping that someone can give me an idea of how to proceed with my research as I would really love to find my ancestors and hopefully visit their homeland soon.

Thank You

Janice

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The surname Towey is almost exclusively found in and around the town of Ballaghaderreen which is now in Co. Roscommon but prior to 1898 was part of Co. Mayo. Likely I won't be able to find any baptismal or the marriage records but let me take a look and get back to you.

There is a Towey Clan and they meet every 3 years usually in Ballaghaderreen  https://irishfamily.toweyclan.com/get-togethers/2017-gathering-report/

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find any baptismal records or the marriage record. Below are the parish registers up to 1880 for the three parishes in the area. All three parishes have baptismal records starting in the 1850s although marriage records start earlier.

  • Hi Roger

Thank you so much for taking the time to do that for me. I know that it can be difficult to find records. I have been searching for them all since 2007 but with your wonderful help I feel a little step closer now I have an area at least where it is possible that they came from. As I said in my post I am hoping to visit soon and now have an area to visit.

Thanks again for helping me. It is much appreciated.
