I believe my second great grandmother, Ann Maralla Gannon, was born in September 1864 in Castlebar. She emigrated to the U.S. in 1885 or 1890. She married Michael Dolan (originally from Ballinlough, Roscommon) in West Orange, New Jersey in 1893. They had four children, John, William, Mary and Annie.

Ann's parents were John Gannon and Bridget McGarrick, but I don't have much more information about them. I'm looking for any information about Ann and her parents.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Meghan

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Civil registration of births started in 1864. I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie  I looked for civil birth records in the Castlebar registration district which encompasses about ten civil parishes in central Co. Mayo and there was only one Ann Gannon birth which is not your ancestor. Go to 1st link and see sixth record on the page.

I found a December 1865 Ann Gannon birth record in the Westport registration district. The parents were John Gannon and Bridget McGuire. Go to 2nd link and see ninth record on the page. Is it possible that Bridget McGuire is your Bridget McGarrick? This family lived in Fallduff townland in Kilgeever civil parish in the southwest corner of Mayo.

Are you aware of any other siblings to Ann?

  • Thanks, Roger. I think it is possible that this Bridget McGuire is my Bridget McGarrick. I'm going to do a bit more digging around with that. Unfortunately, I don't know any other sibling names for certain, though I heard there may have been a brother, Patrick. Thanks again for your help!
