I am not sure if I am posting this to the right parish. My grandmother's birth record shows Parish as Knocklong and Glenbrohane.

In May, I am planning a trip to Ireland. My Fogarty, Purcell, and Kinkead families lived in the area called Glenbrohane, Limerick. I am trying to find out where their homesteads were located. I assume they attended St. Patrick’s Church in Garryspillane/ Glenbrohane, which was close by. I recently noticed the pub there is closed. I was hoping to get information there. I also contacted the priest at St. Patrick’s and he could not help.

Ballinvreena, Glenbrohane, Limerick

My Grandma Raleigh (Anna Fogarty Raleigh) was born in Ballinvreena in 1887. She lived there with her parents, John Fogarty and Honora Murphy, and some of her thirteen siblings. Maurice, her brother, was the last person I found still living there. John Fogarty was a farmer and cattle rancher. He had grown up in the next town over, Glenlara.
In 2003, we drove from Emly on Knocklong Road toward Knocklong. At Knocklong, at the interchange, we took a left toward Ballyander. We drove about 8-10 miles. There was a car dealership on the left and a bright yellow house on the right. At the next intersection, we turned right toward Kilfinnane (There is a post office on the left of the intersection.).Shortly after making the turn, we encountered a sign indicating the town Glenbrohane was the next road on the left. We passed that road and continued down the road to Kilfinnane, traveling 4-5 miles to the first crossroad. There was a sign for the Ballinvreena Recreation Center and we turned left at the intersection, and reached after 500 to 1,000 feet a fork in the road. In front of us was the house previously owned by Mary Irwin, per a neighbor. At the time, I was told the house was to the left or right of the Irwin house?? Recently, I was told you head left at the T intersection (fork) toward Garryspillane and its one of the houses on the right?? I still don’t know which one.

Richard Kinkead and Maria Raleigh, my 2nd great aunt, raised their sons in Ballinvreena. I think their son James Kinkead (1880-1946) married to Nora Ryan lived at the family farm in Ballinvreena.

Glenlara, Limerick

John Fogarty (1841), my great grandfather, was born here. It is right next to Ballinvreena as you head toward Garryspillane. His parents were Patrick Fogarty and Johanna Hayes. Fogartys have been associated with this area since at least 1697. I am not sure if there is still a homestead you can visit.
My great grandparents, John Fogarty and Honora Murphy, are buried at Laraghlawe Cemetery in Glenlara.

Knocklara, Limerick

My gg grandmother, Elizabeth Lane Purcell, lived in Knocklara before she married William Purcell. It is next to Glenlara as you head to Garryspillane. After they got married, Elizabeth and William lived in Knocklara with their twelve children, including my great grandmother, Ann Purcell Raleigh (1851). They were farmers. Their eldest son, James, took over the farm when they retired to Gorteen, Emly. I have been told their homestead would have been near where the Glenbrohane National School is now located. In the 1830 tithe applotment land record, a Samuel Kinkead was living there, perhaps Elizabeth’s grandfather?

I would appreciate any help in finding directions to these homesteads.
Thank you- Mary

  • Hi Mary
I have images of the Land Revision Books for Glenbrohane so I might be able to help with this.  Often it it possible to follow the ownership of the land from about 1850  to around 1965 and find it on the map.  I will have a look later.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Mary

I don't have Land Revision Book images for Ballinvreena  but I have for most of the other townlands.

For now I will just look at Fogarty's in Glenlara.

The land revision book for for the periond 1882-1894 indicates that Patrick Fogarty owned 221 acres in Glenlara (AKA Glenlary).  This is a very large holding for that time but looking at the map it looks like about 65% of it was mountain.   Today it is mainly planted as woodland.  You can find Lot 15 on the online map on AskAboutIreland at the following link.

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doPlaceSearch&Submit.x=35&Submit.y=1&freetext=Glenlary&countyname=LIMERICK

Click the magnifying glass symbol on the left and zoom in.  You can switch between the historic map and Satellite view.

This is the link in Google Maps for the same homestead.  https://goo.gl/maps/iMaUA6482HE2

It is not clear from the image if it is still occupied but the house and farm buildings seem to be still standing.  The Google Street View of the entrance seems to indicate that the driveway is somewhat disused looking so possibly nobody lives there now.

The owner changed from John Fogarty to Cornelius O'Dwyer in 1941.   We could probably establish locally who owns it now with this information.
If you have an Ancestry family tree could you please invite darragh@IrelandXO.com
I will try to loacate another homestead tomorrow.

    Best wishes
    Tim

  • Tim,

Thank you for this information. I have a tree on Ancestry. Sometimes I use it as a research tool and try out connections. That said, I will send you an invite.

  • Further to the information above, Cornelius Dwyer married Anne Fogarty in 1919 so this would appear to be the reason for the name change on the property.  I have attached a copy of the marriage certificate from Irishgenealogy.ie

    Purcell Knocklary

In 1879 William Purcell occupied Lots 8A, 8B, 9A, 9B and 11.  The dwelling house on property 8A is indicated by a small letter "a" on the AsKAboutIreland.ie map at the link above.    It is on the end of a short driveway just north of Glenbrohane National School.  It seems that Lot 11 was a sand pit and the dwelling house is nearby in Lot 8A.
The modern map shows a house still at this position:  https://goo.gl/maps/EQJ3ZcLcGSF2
You can also see the entrance on Google Street View

The most recent owner I can see was also called William Purcell, that was in 1965.

Hello Mary, I’m also descended from the Kinkeads of Ballinvreena through Thomas/Nora Barrett. I worked with Limerick Genealogy a few years back and discovered that the home was owned my Maria Raleigh Kinkead as of the 1930s, and they provided maps. If you provide an email address I’d be happy to share with you. Sara

  • Sarah,
Thank you for responding to my message. I think we've been in touch before. Prior to Richard and Marie living in Ballinvreena, I believe your Thomas and Richards' parents, James Kinkead (1810) and Sarah Cunningham, leased the land. Tim has provided me with a map with the Ballinvreena area and I found this site last week.

    http://www.ouririshheritage.org/content/archive/place/kilfinane-coshlea…

Per a resident of the area, the house is covered with ivy.

I also connect to the Kinkead family through my gg grandmother, Elizabeth Lane Purcell (1816-1900), who lived in Knocklara with her husband William. It has been suggested and supported by DNA results that Elizabeth's mother was Sarah Kinkead (abt. 1785), daughter of Samuel Kinkead (abt. 1764) of Lackelly and sister of your James Kinkead's (1810) father, Richard Kinkead (abt. 1782). Do you know where the Kinkead homestead is in Lackelly?

I think I have your email from 2016 if you want to connect.

    Regards- Mary
