Dear Jane,

Good of you to contact me. I have been trying for over sixty years to trace my roots.

My Grandfather Thomas Sampson married three times.

First to Catherine Fitzgerald in Tipperary Town in 1874 Catherine died 1893 

The second time in Cork to Margaret Baker (my Grandmother) in 1896 Margaret died 1908

The third time to Ellen McGuire in Listowel in 1909

My Great Grandfather was John Sampson

It as if the Sampson roots the Fitzgerald’s and the Barkers never existed.I have tried everything adds in newspapers cemetery visits contacting Excel andBru Bru etc visited Libraries and County Councils and Parish offices etc over the past sixty plus years.

The nearest I have got to my roots is John Sampson May have married a Johanna Hickey in Tipperary Parish.

My Grandfather was first employed in Tipperary Town in 1866 he married in Tipperary Town lived in Nelson Street.

I believe John Sampson might have lived lived in Gortnaknockaere and myGreat Great Grandfather Thomas Sampson may have farmed in Duntryleague near Tipperary Town.

I have no proof as there were no birth certificates prior to 1864 and even then not well kept.

I have had some really good help and just maybe what I have is correct.

Jane if you can add to this information or direct me along a path I have not tried I would be grateful. I have contacted and met a number of Sampson families in different Counties but discovered no connection.

I have looked at the first marriage record for Thomas Sampson and it appears that he was 26 years old at the date of his marriage in 1874.  His father was named John Sampson and he was deceased, and a clerk.    Thomas was a railway clerk, so he sounds as if he moved around a bit. 

In the 1901 Census, Thomas Sampson is living in Clonalour townland in Tralee and he is employed as a Station Master.  His son, Thomas Jr. is also employed in the rail.  His information states that he was born in County Tipperary and he is listed as being 51 years old. 

Looking at the Roots Ireland database, I find a Thomas Sampson born in 1850 with a father John Sampson in County Tipperary.  Here is the particular information:

Thomas Sampson

baptised 17 April 1850

Cahir Parish, County Tipperary.

He resided on Church Street.

Parents were:  John Sampson & H Stapleton

Sponsors were:  Jacob English and J Tobin.

The National Library of Ireland parish register reference and link is below:

You might note that it appears that the date on the transcription record at Roots Ireland is not correct.  The register date appears to be 17 May and NOT April. 

To cause further confusion, this record stands corrected on the Cahir County Waterford Roots Ireland database! 

I do see other siblings born to this family:

Margaret Samson  25 December 1848.  She was resident in Cashel Road, Cahir parish Waterford.  Her parents were:  John Samson and Honora Stapleton.  Sponsors were:  John Moran and Honor O'Donnell.

Tobias Sampson  11 March 1854. He was also resident in Cashel Road, Cahir parish, Waterford.  His parents were:  John Sampson and Honora Stapleton.  Sponsors were:  Thomas Sampson and M. Dunne. 

You will note that the "p" was not noted in Margaret's baptism record, but noted in Tobias and Thomas's. 

We have a wonderful local volunteer in Cahir and I'm going to copy this post to him.  He will be able to add further information to it, I'm sure.

Thank you so much for all your information. You have blown over sixty years of research out of the water. Cahir is also near TipperaryTown-makes sense.

My Grandfather was first employed by the WL&WR in 1866. I know of all the children he had and mostly where he was stationed. Only one Uncle is missing Joseph Sampson. I know where all the rest are buried and I only found my Grandmother (Margaret Baker) grave two years ago in Rathaus Cemetery in Tralee.

I do not know where Catherine Fitzgerald is buried her Father Martin Fitzgerald was present when she died in Nelson Street (now Ashe Street) in Tralee.

My difficulty has been tracing my Greatgrandfater and my Great Great Grandfather or where they came from

I am very excited that what you have uncovered is important. I have my Grandfathers marriage certificates from 1874 wherein his Father John Sampson was recorded as being (deceased) hand written in pencil.

I dismissed Cahir years ago because the information I had seemed to centre around Duntryleague and Gortaknockeare Townland also near Tipperary Town where  my Grandfather first worked and lived in Nelson Street. Catherine Fitzgerald’s Father was a Shopkeeper I assumed in Tipperary Town.

Can you prove the the Cahir Sampson was where my Grandfather was born / baptised. 

I am very grateful for your input. I have a feeling that Brú Brú or Excel gave me this information some years ago when I called into their offices.

I will look at the link you kindly sent to me and go back over my many notes to see Honora Stapleton and John Sampson. I may have been searching in the wrong area for years. If the thrust be know I origionally thought my roots were from County Kerry until 1992 I visited a FAS office in Nenagh Town and got a good deal of information on my Grandfather and some of his children. About three years ago I found my Aunt Bridget Sampson who pasted away and is buried in Springfield Capetown South Africa she was a Dominican nun Sister Kieran but the Order could give me no information about her. She died in 1913.

I have been digging in my notes and the reason I ruled out John Sampson and Honora Stapleton was for something very smal which was a son namesTobais.

I was of the opinion that it was usual to continue with family Christian names from the Fathers family for sons and the Mothers family names for the daughters.

Most of my Grandfathers sons had Joseph in their names but never a Tobias my Grandfathers daughter was named after Catherine Sampsons (née Fitzgerald) Mother Bridget Burke. This was my thinking behind the passing on of Christian names.

I will be more then interested in your friend findings. Incidently on my Grandfathers second marriage in 1896 to Margaret Baker his Father was recorded on the marriage certificate as a Farmer. In the first marriage to Catherine Fitzgerald the word deceasedwas penciled in.

I am looking forward to your friends analysis. Thank you again there are so many helpful people who give of their time to help others.

Tipperary town Parish is in the Dioceses of Cashel and Emly and it  was  also in the Electoral area of South Tipperary,recently combined with North Tipperary to make one administative area called County Tipperary.The Catholic Church records for the parishes in the South Tipperary that were in the Diocese of Cashel and Emly (including Tipperary town) were never on line in a searchable form and available for public view even with subscription.

Tipperary Family History Research is the only facility to offer a research service based on access to the Baptismal and Marriage records of the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Cashel & Emly. The Archdiocese covers most of County Tipperary and part of County Limerick and it contains 46 Parishes.(details file attached)

I would advise strongly that you contact them relating to Samson family in Tipperary town,  they are very helpful and very reasonable with their charges . In the first or second year of the Civil records 1864-1865 (all available free on line) there was a birth in Tipperary town of a Sampson to a father John  (shoe maker) so it is possible that he had younger children. 

If you fail  to get your ancestors from TFHR then the family in Cahir is worth looking at, as they are still operating their shop in Cahir  on Church Street, the same street as the Railway Station.I would know some of the family and could get more information but concentrate initially on TFHR.

Thank you so much for your message. Just to fill you in I have been researching my Sampson roots for over 60 years with some success I have to say with help from a number of people. Just when I think I am on the right track I come to a Cul De Sac. I am heartened by the number of people would want to help.

I have been in touch with Excel in Tipperary Town, TFHR and Bru Boru as well as putting adds in Newspapers, visiting Libraries and Cemertaries etc. I called on Sampsons I’m Clonmel and was told they couldtracttheir family back as far as 1700.

I would be most grateful if you had a word with the Sampson family you know in Cahir. I am always hoping for a link however small that might unlock my roots. All my own family have long since passed away and I have no relatives that I know of to contact.

Dear Thomas J Hussey,

Thank you so much for this magnificent research. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I note that the spelling of Sampson differs to Samson. I had one uncle who did spell his surname Samson and is listed in the Lartigue Meseum in Listowel as Martin Samson. I even brought his baptismal certificate to the officials there but they never changed the spelling.

A Margaret Sampson was a sponsor to my Aunt Bridget Sampson when she was born.

One of the things that threw me off was the son Tobias an unusual Christian name. Most of my uncles had Joseph somewhere in their Christian names but never a Tobias.

When my Grandfather Thomas Sampson married Catherine Fitzgerald in Tipperary Town in 1874 his Father John Sampson was recorded as deceased (written in pencil on the marriage certificate.

When my Grandfather was married a second time to a Margaret Baker in Cork his Father was recorded as a farmer but not deceased?

My Father never spoke of his Aunts or Uncles but I now put that down to some families maintain contact but other families do not. In contrast my Mother was great at keeping in touch with her siblings all of whom I met. I even met my Grandmother on my Mothers side. My Mothers roots were easy to track they were all from County Kerry.

The strange thing is that my Grandfathers first wife’s family the Fitzgeralds and his second wife’s family the Bakers all “disappeared” as if they never existed. My Sampson roots (beyond my Grandfather and his children) have also evaded me for well over sixty years. 

I am very excited that you may have found the missing link. I look forward to any update in the future.

Thank you for all the help you are giving me. Much appreciated.

My Grandfather Thomas Sampson was first employed by the WL&WR Railways in 1866 in Tipperary Town, this is where he lived on Nelson Street and where he married Catherine Fitzgerald in 1874. I am able to trace my Grandfather to different locations until he retired in 1925 while Statioed in Listowel, County Kerry.

My Grandfathers first born was John but he sadly died weeks later. He was named after my Great Grandfather John Sampson. The second born was Bridget named after Catherine Fitzgerald’s Mother Bridget Burke. Bridget became a Dominican Nun and died in Capetown South Africa in 1913 (Sister Kieran) It took me sixty years to locate where she was.

The trouble I originally had was zi believed the Sampsons were from County Kerry until a member of the Fas project in Nenagh enlightened me about my Grandfather Thomas in Tipperary Town. The Railways record show Thomas was first employed as a Clerk in 1866 in TipperaryTown.

I am looking forward to what other discoveries you might uncover and hopefully there even might be a living relative. I had the DNA test but so far only distant cousins of my Mothers family have contacted me ie third, forth or fifth cousins. No Sampsons. I had one uncle Martin Sampson baptised Martin Sampson but signed himself Martin Samson. He was the only uncle who did so.

Dear Thomas Hussey,

Happy new year to you and thank you for taking the time to visit Sean Sampson and investigating my roots possibility. I have spent over sixty years traveling down one road or another and usually end in a cul de sac. I have to confess the investitionns keep me occupied and hopeful.

I believed that the information on John Sampson who passed away in Gortaknockeare was in fact my Great Great Grandfather and Thomas Sampson was my Grandfather as Gortaknockeare was close to Tipperary Town where my Grandfather was first employed by the WLWR in 1866.

The problem I am now having is that when my Grandfather Thomas Sampson married Catherine aFitzgerald in 1874 the marriage Certificate has a John Sampson my Great Great Grandfather a Clerk as being deceased. NB deceased was written in pencil. Catherine Sampson née Fitzgerald passed away in 1893 in Tralee, County Kerry. My Grandfather Thomas Sampson married Margaret Baker in Cork in 1896 and the marriage certificate shows my Great Great Grandfather John Sampson as being alive occupation farmer. Maybe if the records showed the reverse John Sampson in 1874 at my Grandfathers first marriage and deceased in 1896 ar Thomas Sampson’s second marriage it would make better sense. I know records were not well kept in the 1800’s

I have been to Ballylanders and Gortaknockeare but have not found any evidence of Sampson’s in either Gortaknockeare or Duntryleague but I met Willie Sampson in Ballylanders who has since passed away. There is a Mrs. Sampson living in the village of Ballylanders who has a son who worked on Willie Sampson’s farm. But nobody claimed me there.

It is good of you to go to all this trouble for me and I appreciate all your hard work. I will keep in touch and if I uncover more information I will be in touch.

Thank you very much for this information regarding County Limerick. No Inever looked at these records. I would not be as proficient as your good self at researching. Could I ask you to tell me where these records are and how to access them. These records with luck might verify that this John Sampson is indeed my Great Great Grandfather.

I am again most grateful for your valuable assistance. Can these records be viewed online or do I need to travel to Limerick and if so where in County Limerick. 

What I found difficult to understand was the Sampson’s did not leave an easy trail to follow but neither did Catherine Fitzgerald’s family and it did not end there my Great Grandfather on my Grandmother Margaret Bakers side died in Kanturk County Cork but his burial location is not know by anyone in that Town. I found my Grandmothers grave three years ago in Rathass Cemetary in County Kerry. One of my Uncles Joseph also “disappeared” The other members of the Sampson family I do have information on slim as it is. My Aunt Bridget Sampson joined the Dominican Order and died aged 31 in Capetown South Africa. I only ever met Martin Sampson who spelled his surname Samson and Herbert Joseph Sampson who passed away in Dublin.

The only link by way of the Sampson’s Christian names is there appears to be Joseph attached to each of them even my Father was Anthony Joseph Gerard.

I would appreciate a direction from your good self as to where I can view the Limerick records.

You are a mine of information. I look forward to your next message. I have always been searching for one small clue that would finally locate my family roots. When I started out I never thought it would be so difficult. In the case of my Mothers Curtin family they were relatively “easy” to trace as they all came from County Kerry in a trail from Listowel along the Western borders of Kerry to Sneem and Valencia Island.

I have been very fortunate with receiving help from knowledgeable researches like your good self.

The John in Ballinlough was a blacksmith

The "Clerk" Sampson's John and his wife Honora Doran lived in various houses about Tipperary town. He was clerk to  court and baliff's.  I will look through  my notes for further info on this family

Thank you for your email. I am not as good as you at finding information as a result I did not progress further. I am not a hundred percent sure on how to go about the leads you were kind enough to give me.

I did receive a message from a sender named Cordangan Tipperary who said my Great Grandfather was a Court Clerk and Bailiff in Tipperary. He gave me his email address and I have tried contacting him as he said he had note on my Great Grandfather who resided in different locations in Tipperary Town. I have not heard back from him.

If you have any advice regarding the records you referred to please advise me.

 Cordangan informatio seems promising and if I had a time line  I might be able to progress the issue, I am aware of another Thomas Sampson family in Ballylooby and I have been informed that he is interested in Genealogy but I  have no information on his background and will await your response from  Cordangan  before move on another front.

One positive outcome of researching the Cahir Sampsons  was that I found the burial place of their g.g. grandfather in a rural graveyard near Cahir.

Keep up the search and if you get some information I will try and progress  same.  The next time I am in Cahir will try and contact Mr Sampson in Ballylooby.

Cordangan Tipperary stated 13/01/2019 on Ireland xo message board that in June 1842 John was born to John Sampson and Margaret Heffernan in Bansha.

John married Honora Doran and lived in various houses in Tipperary Town

I am hoping this information is the missing link.

I  attached the birth records for Thomas, John and James, children of John and Margaret Heffernan and also the bapiismal record for James son of William and Mary Butler  and Thomas son of William and Mary Barron11th Feb 1856  all at Cordangan ie Bansha Kilmoyler. I can also find the two marriages for Willian in this Parish. Hopefully you can join some of the dots.

Hi Tom,

Thank you so much for all that information. I have tried to tie in dates I have for my Grandfather Thomas Sampson. First employed by the WL&WR in 1866 in Tipperary Town, married Catherine Fitzgerald also living in the Town in 1874. My Grandfather died in 1931 in Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin aged 84 and is buried in Glasnevin Cemetary.

I am not sure the Thomas mentioned in your email fits the bill except for James Sampson and Mary Butler who had a son Thomas born 1847. The other Thomas was born in 1840.

John Sampson the Court Clerk who lived in Tipperary Town seems a likely contender. 

I will investigate all the information you were kind enough to give me and if I have any news I will contact you immediately.
