Hello--
I just found the baptismal record for my 2x great grandfather, James Tumpan (Tompane), 26 Jan 1847, in the parish of Toomevara. It says that James' father's name was Michael and his mother's name was Mary Gleeson, and that their residence was Ballinree. I'd be very grateful for any further information about the Tumpane and Gleeson families, especially dates for Michael and Mary, and any idea of what their llives were like Thank you ...Marcia

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find any baptismal records for siblings to James. I also did not find a marriage record for Michael Tumpane and Mary Gleeson, however, I did find an 1846 marriage for a Michael Tumpane and a Winifred Gleeson in the Cloughjordan RC records. Cloughjordan is the RC parish just to the north of Toomevara. Most marriages occurred in the bride's parish. There won't be any baptismal records for Michael and Mary since the Toomevara records start in 1831 and the Cloughjordan records start in 1833. See links below.
Ballinree townland is part of the civil parish of Ballymackey. I looked at the 1850 head of household listing for Ballymackey and there were a number of Gleeson records including three Michael records but none in Ballinree. Did Michael and Mary emigrate after James was born?
1847 was the height of the Great Hunger and life was very difficult for all of the tenant farmers and their families which led to mass emigration from Ireland in the late 1840s and beyond.
Let me know what questions you have.

Hello, Roger--Thanks very muich for your help! Do you think Tumpane (or,as I've seen it spelled Thumpine, tompins, tompane) is an uncommon surname? If so, I"m not terribly concerned about the Winifred/Mary discrepancy. James emigrated in 1870, and as near as I can tell, was not accompanied by any family members. I also don't see in US census records, any indication that his father and mother joined him in America. I need to look for death or burial recods for Michael and Winifred/Mary. I know, of course, about The Great Hunger. I wonder if Ballinree was a farming community, if they were tenant farmers, ( and what was the landlord like) was there a school, what were the houses like...

Marcia:
The surname Tumpane was rare and only found in North Tipperary in the mid-19th century. A few in Ballymackey parish but most in the neighboring parish of Castletownarra. I saw two Tompane records in Co. Clare. You can check out the other variants at one of these two sites.
