Patrick Gallagher b.1801(from death notice)  emigrated to Newfoundland then a British Colony now part of Canada around 1820 and married Alice Madden in Newfoundland. Marriage Records show Priest entered Waterford as birth location vs. other entries by same priest which gave a specific area of Waterford. Settled in fishing community with many Irish. Patrick’s death notice in 1882 clearly states “born in Waterford “. Alice Madden Born 1813 Mooncoin County Kilkenny Ireland d.1899 St. John’s Newfoundland . A lot of early Irish were fishers and came to Newfoundland as fisherman. This happened well before famine and mass exodus to Upper Canada and USA. Some stayed. Thousands in fact. Was in Cork and saw references of Fishermen some Gallaghers. Tithing records shows 3-4 Gallagher families in Waterford area.

You may want to study the Irish naming pattern and consider it in light of the names of Patrick’s children to verify or rule out the above parents

  • Mary Ann Madden m Timothy Ahern in Co. Cork in 1850. They emigrated to Boston area in 1872/3 where they lived in Brookline MA with their grown children around them.  The  parish records recording their marriage did not l ist family by name.  Their witnesses could have been father brother or cousin.  Mary Ann and Tim had the following children:  Michael, Daniel, David, Anna/Annie, and Mary. Whatever their occupation in Ireland, in Boston they father and sosns were listed as Laborers.  Living nearby in Brookline was Daniel Madden and his familly, likely Mary Ann's brother, they did not arrive  in Boston together on  the same boat or day .  Mary Ann Madden's dtr Annie  was my great grandmother, Annie's eldest son my grandfather.    I  would like to discover Mary Ann Madden's family line.   Do any of these names sound familiar?
