I am searching for the extended families of Michael Sheridan and Margaret Size. They were the parents of my great grandfather Patrick Sheridan who was born 1856 in Ballinrobe, County Mayo. The only other known children of Michael and Margaret are two sons: Thomas baptised 8th July 1862 and William baptised 30th June 1864, but I don't know in which Catholic Church they were baptised? There has been no found record of Partick's baptism.
I would like to find out more about Patrick's extended family in Ballinrobe. Also I'd like to know if the families remained in Ireland, as Patrick had moved to Liverpool sometime before January1880 when he married Emma Ellis of Liverpool. The couple eventally migrated to and settled in Australia in 1883.
Thanks in advance

Margaret:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I checked the subscription site Roots Ireland and the baptisms for Thomas and William were held in the Ballinrobe RC Church and the civil record for William indicated that the family was living in Ballinrobe. I did not find a marriage record for Michael and Margaret. Is it possible that the family came from another parish? I saw an 1852 baptismal record for a Patrick Sheridan in Aghagower parish. Parents were listed as Michael and Margaret Sheridan.
www.irishgenealogy.ie is a free site which has images of civil death records starting in 1878.You may want to search for records for Michael and Margaret in the Ballinrobe registration district.
I did not see Michael or Margaret in Ballinrobe in the 1901 census.
Have you considered DNA testing?

Thank you for the reply, your searches and the referral to the Irish genealogy site. I have already done the DNA testing but no relevant family connections to Patrick's brothers to date. Fingers crossed that someone will eventually show up!
Best wishes from Australia

You may want to add your DNA to the volunteer run site called Gedmatch www.gedmatch.com. Gedmatch will provide matches with people who tested with another testing company and also loaded their data to Gedmatch. It expands your matching pool.

Hello! My great grandparents Patrick Walsh and Mary (McEnroy) Walsh emigrated from Ireland ca. 1850, probably County Mayo or County Roscommon, but I have no further information on my Walsh family in Ireland, and unfortunately Walsh is the 4th most common surname in Ireland at that time. Is my only hope a DNA match with distant cousins in Ireland? Thanks very much for any suggestions. --David Welsh, San Diego, welshdk@ucsd.edu

David:
I did a quick search on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a marriage record for Patrick and Mary. Either they married in the States or they married in a church that no longer has records back to 1850.
DNA matching may give you some leads and your matches more likely will be with 3rd/4th cousins living outside of Ireland. The Irish are moving into DNA testing slower than those in America/Australia/Canada etc. However, a 3rd cousin in America may have more details on your Walsh and McEnroy lines.

Hi ok I think I can help you in your search, for Sheridan relatives. County Mayo Ballenrobe.
My great great Grandmother Honoria(?) Daly married MichaeL Sheridan. She was 15/16, he was young also. They stayed with her father for a time. He supposedly was a real grouch. They use to climb out the window at night and go to kaileys to dance. Sometimes all the little kids would follow them. My grandmother Mary, was the oldest.
The names of their children(I dont remember all). Were Mary, Nora,Ellen, James (was a runner during Irish rebellion),William,Patrick,Michael, Thomas and I dont remember another brothers name. Their mother made sure they all went to school. I do have some pictures of several of them.
Pat,,Tom,Michael and the other brother did not immigrate to USA as far as I am aware. My grandmother came in steerage at 15 worked for a Dr on (I think this is correct address)5th ave NYC.One of the cousins was Gen Phillip Sheridan.

Thank you for the information on your Sheridan family. Do you have any BDM dates for Honoria and Michael and their children, so that I can see which generation they belong to, and whether they possibly connect to my Sheridan family?
I would be interested is seeing any photos that you have - even if to spot any resemblances.
Best wishes

Hello, Margaret and Eileen,
This may be of little use to you but my 2nd great grandmother was Bridget Sheridan or Jordan (records vary) born in Mayo --possibly Kilconduff --in 1841. It's possible that her mother was the Sheridan, married to a Jordan. Somewhere in my research, and it may have been on this site, I was told that the Jordan and Sheridan names sometimes were used interchangeably. So, be on the lookout for Jordans on your trees! Best wishes to you both.
