    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Can you provide more information on Patrick? Year of birth, parents, did he emigrate? There were fifteen Byrne families in the 1901 census for the parish of Bohola. I can't locate Treenabantry. It must be a local place name. FYI. Our policy prevents us from researching anyone who may be living.

  • I have ancestors from Bohola and neighboring parishes (including some Byrne relatives in a nearby parish), and looked around to see what I could find about Treenabantry.  It appears to be a "sub-townland" (a local name, as Roger mentioned, rather than a formal one) within the townland of Lismiraun (Lismirrane in some older documents).  You can see more info about Lismiraun at this link:  https://www.townlands.ie/mayo/gallen/bohola/meelick/lismiraun/

In the 1930's, Irish school children were sent out to collect local folklore and history from older people in the parish, and you can find what was collected in Lismiraun at this link:  https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4427944  You can download the info page by page using the "Download" button which you'll see on the screen.

In Irish, Lismiraun is Lios Mearáin (Lios Meadhráin in the older spelling).  A lios is a ring-fort or enclosure. I'm not sure what the second word means, but it may be a form of the word for "dizzy" or "bewildered" in irish (so, "ring fort of the bewildered"?).  There's a history of the parish of Bohola (which mentions both Lismiraun and Treenabantry) at this link:  http://www.irelandgenweb.com/irlmay/CivilParishes/BoholaCP.htm  and in the history they seem to agree as to the second word, indicating that the townland name may refer to a ring fort of those who were "put astray" (rendered bewildered?).  Interestingly, there's also a mention that a local school in Lismiraun (now demolished) was believed to be haunted, having beeen built with stones from a ring fort.

Lismiraun lies to the south of the town of Bohola, in the direction of Kiltimagh (which is in the parish of Killedan).  One branch of my family lived in the townland of Treanfohanaun, which adjoins Lismiraun to the east, and one of my grandfathers in another branch grew up just a short way south of Lismiraun, across the parish boundary in Killedan.  I've done DNA testing, as have several of my second cousins from the area, so if you have as well and want to compare results, let me know.

You didn't mention any dates, so I'm not sure what period you're searching.  The online parish registers for Bohola only go back to 1857, and can be found at this link:  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0122    Older baptisms or marriages can sometimes be found in the parish register for Swinford, which adjoins both Bohola and Killedan (I found some records of my Killedan ancestors there).
