My great-grandfather was Patrick Joseph Regan, born 1851-53 in Co. Mayo.
His marriage certificate, in 1885, gives his fathers name and profession, as Michael Regan (deceased) Boot maker.
My late father always claimed that the Regan family came from Ballyhaunis, but I have searched online records for many years, and can neither prove or disprove this.
Patrick married a local woman in Goldenhill, Staffordshire, England. How did he come to be there?
I have a book about the Irish in Victorian Britain that studied the Irish population in the county town of Stafford, pre and post famine. It states that a high proportion of Irish, working in the shoe trade - for which Stafford was renowned, came from a small area in Ireland " straddling the borders of Cos. Galway, Mayo and Roscommon, in an arc up to 15 miles south and west of Castlerea Co. Roscommon". This would cover Ballyhaunis.
If Patrick followed other migrants from his local area, and/or his fathers profession, that could explain haw he came to be where he was, but I can't find out where he came from. His children didn't follow any traditional naming patterns.
I don't know where to look next for either Patrick or Michael.

Anne Marie:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
The baptismal records for Annagh/Ballyhaunis RC parish start in November 1851. I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find Patrick's baptismal record transcription so my guess is that he was baptized before November 1851. Do you know his mother's name or had any younger siblings?
I looked at the 1901 census for Annagh civil parish and there were a at least four or five shoemakers in the town.
I would try to contact the Ballyhaunis branch library and see if there are any business directories for the town in 1860-1870.

I located a possible lead for you - a marriage of a Mary Regan & James Boggins in Ballina (Kilmoremoy parish) in 1883 - bride's father is a Michael Regan shoemaker, deceased, see entry 13 on the register image. Marriages generally took place in the bride's parish, so possibly where she grew up...
The residence for both the bride & groom is Ardnaree which is adjacent to the town of Ballina so not far from the border with Co. Sligo.

The Death Records for Michael Regan in Claremorris (The Civil District for Ballyhaunis) only has one entry for a Michael Regan that would be of the expected age fora parent of children born in the 1850s 60s

While the above is speculative for your research it is the best I can come up with for you.
Just treat is as a lead.
