Henrietta Spink (1890 – 1948) was my paternal grandmother

Parents John Spink (1851 – 1935) and Annie McIntyre (1859-?)

John and Anne were married 16 Oct 1876 in Rathdown, Dublin, Ireland

On the 1901 census the Spink family is shown in Gaybrook townland, Enniscoffey parish

The family is Church of Ireland

John’ profession is listed as “Sub Postmaster” and “Auxiliary Postman”

Annie’s profession is listed as “Post Office Assistant” and she was born in county Dublin

The dwelling where they lived is listed as both the post office and a private dwelling

Henrietta is listed as 10 years old

Her sister Emily is listed as 4 years old

Henrietta left Ireland in 1908 and came to Cleveland, Ohio in 1908/1909; likely going through Canada first before coming to the USA.

In 1910 Henrietta met and married John Kilroy in Cleveland, Ohio.  Prior to their marriage, Henrietta converted to the Catholic Church.

On the 1911 census the Spink family is shown in Gaybrook Demesne townland, Enniscoffey parish

The family is Church of Ireland

John’ profession is listed as “Sub Postmaster” and “Postman”

Annie does not have a profession listed”

The dwelling where they lived is listed as a private dwelling

Daughter Emily is listed as 14 years old

              Based on the number of children born – 5; and the number of children still living – 5;

Found a birth registration for a daughter, born in 1877 in Rathdown, Dublin which is where her mother was from and where her parents were married.

Found brothers William Thomas and Henry

William Thomas born1882

Henry born 1889

John Kilroy (1883-1955) was from Glenhest, Newport, county Mayo and he came to Cleveland in 1905.

John and Henrietta’s children were:

Josephine (Sr. Mary Vincent, OSU) (1911 – 2000)

              Gilbert (1912 – 1975)

              John P., Jr (1914-1914)

              William (1916 – 1962)

              Rita (1918 – 2006)

              Henrietta (1919-2014)

              John B (1921 – 1986)

              Leo (1924 – 1941)

              Georgene (1927 – 2004)

              Robert (1933 – 1991)

                             Robert was my father

I would like to be able to find any other descendants of John Spink and Annie McIntyre Spink.  Also, is there still a post office in Gaybrook?

I have subscriptions to ancestry.com; Find My Past, rootsireland.ie, and Family Search.  Would welcome any new suggestions for searching for additional details on this family.

I will be in Mullingar for vacation this summer from the evening of Saturday, August 18th through Monday morning, August 20th.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • The Post Office is shown on the c1890 OSI map, adjacant to Gaybrook Cross-roads.  The basic structure seems to be still there but is no longer a post office - see Google Street View.

John and Annie's marriage took place in Newtown Park Church of Ireland aprish, which is located near the town of Blackrock Co. Dublin (Rathdown is the registration district).

I located a marriage in Ireland for one of the children - Emily who married a John Gray, a Chauffeur in 1922.

  • Hello,

I was just reading this and I am chasing the Spink Family my great Grandfather  Ralph Spink was born in Co Westmeath 1856 and so was his father William Spink Ballymena Antrim.  That is all I know from my Grandfathers records.  I was wondering if anyone knows about the Spink family. Ralph married Sarah Jane Wright she was  born 12 MAY 1864 • Kilmood, Down, Co, Westmeath, Ireland.  Ralph and Sarah had my grand dad Acheson Spink who married Eliza Jane Knox from Co Fermanagh, her dad was Thomas Knox and her mum was Esther Thompson, also known as Essie of Advarney. I am so totally stumped on my families in Ireland.  Any help information would be so gratefully accepted.

    Cheers

    Sandra
