Their daughter Mary Ellen married in Canada in 1865.  If we assume she was about 20 years old at the time we have a birth date for her about 1844.  At this point I really don't find evidence of her family in Canada.  So I don't know if they died in Ireland or emigrated.  I also don't know if Mary Ellen had siblings so cannot guess a possible age for her parents or their marriage.

I got her parents names from her marriage register in Canada and the Name Michael Murphy is readable as is Nenagh Parish, Tipperary.  Her mother's maid name is readable as Ryan.  But the first name is fuzzy - a tall letter followed by three short letters so it could be Sara or Jane or some other short first name.

Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on Roots Ireland and there were no baptismal records in North Tipperary including Nenagh for Murphy children with a mother with the surname of Ryan. Also, looked for a marriage record and the only Michael Murphy marriage to a Ryan was an 1831 marriage to an Ellen Ryan in Upperchurch RC parish.

I looked at the 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Nenagh civil parish and there was no Michael Murphy listed.

Civil registration of deaths started in 1864. I looked in the Nenagh registration district from 1864-1900 and there was only one Michael Murphy record for an adult. Likely this is not your ancestor but the record is below.

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • I have done DNA testing with Ancestry however DNA testing relies on building up your paper tree in order to make your matches.  I have to somehow make a connection to either the Ryan or Murphy family and I know next to nothing about the ancestors in Ireland.  Thanks to the connection to the Michael Murphy you sent.  The age range is right 1810 - 1880 but not enough information to either count him in or rule him out.  His wife is Mary but in  a Catholic family that's common.  The marriage to Ellen Ryan is interesting as its Mary Ellen Murphy I'm trying to research.

I have tested with Ancestry and also Family Tree DNA. Ancestry is not good for any analytical work on your DNA. Can I recommend a site called Gedmatch www.gedmatch.com  Gedmatch is a volunteer run site where you can load your raw Ancestry DNA data and see who you match from other testing companies (for people who have also loaded their data to Gedmatch). My wife, has a Murphy great-grand father born in Ireland and we are struggling to determine the county. We have leads in Cork, Tipperary and Kilkenny. The one thing I have learned with DNA testing is to have patience and eventually a breakthru happens. All the best!
