Hello to all, this is my first message and it is fundamental to my search for the origins of the Flanagan family that arrived in Glasgow c. 1870. My ancestors were married on May 29th 1863 in Aghabog. This much I know from Ancestry.co.uk. The couple were Robert Flanagan and Jane Fox. Jane's father was Thomas Fox and I believe her mother's maiden name may have been Stephenson. Robert's father's name was Edward.  What I am looking for is information on where they were married and anyting else that ccould be garnered. All help gratefully received!

  • What looks to be the civil marriage record for this couple was registered in Cootehill 1863 Volume 4, page 293. (Jane’s surname appears as Faux in Ancestry’s records).

That certificate should record the fathers’ names but more importantly the couples townlands (addresses) and the parties occupations.  Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church which should be on the certificate (unless it was a Registry Office marriage). That church may be the place to look for her baptism and that of any siblings.

Post the details here and we’ll see if we can assist.

A transcript of the marriage is on rootsireland (subscription) or you can order a research copy (photocopy) of the civil certificate from GRO Roscommon for €4 (euros). https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You can e-mail your order to them and they will e-mail the certificate back.

Elwyn, your message has been most helpful. We now have a place in time and space to return to co. Monaghan and pay hommage. Thanks. Eric
