Hi I am looking for anything to do with John george Steele! I have realized in my search that there appears to be a lot of them but nothing that compares to the known knowledge I have of him so far.I am hoping someone will be able to help me as to who his parents were. John george though i think may of commonly used the name george most of the time. He was my great grandfather born 1879 Navars county Meath ireland. One of the census had him as a warehouseman  in ireland and a soldier in the royal army medical corps in England. When my grandfather  Roy was born he was living in plumstead in lion lane England.

George married Alice Margaret Clark I think about 1906 ish and they had 3 boys, Alfred,Leslie and Roy my grandfather. The whole family emigrated to Newzealand 24th July 1924 aboard the ionic. George was 43yrs old and Alice 36yrs, boys 16,14 and 12yrs old. They departed fromSouthampton. My great grandparents then divorced in invercargill newzealand in 1934.

Alice remarried a few years later and John george I cannot find anything else on.No death notices, remarriage etc.I am frustrated now as to how I find where his resting place is, but will continue this search.I know that he never boarded a ship back to his home country. Where are you John george?

My question though is someone able to relate to this man at all and can offer up some information related to his earlier life and his family and siblings etc.

Many thanks Kelly /Steele

  • John George Steele’s marriage to Alice Clark was registered in Brentford, Middx in Oct – Dec 1906, Volume 3a, page 316.  I suggest you get a copy of that marriage certificate to get his father’s name and occupation, which may help narrow the search in Ireland.

You can order a copy of the certificate from GRO for £9.25 (sterling).

    https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

According to the 1911 census, George’s place of birth was Navan, Co. Meath. He was in the RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corps) so there may be military records on him that you could search for, at the National Archives in Kew, London.

I looked at the births in Navan 1875 to 1885 and did not find any Steele births, let alone a John George, so not encouraging, but if you have his father’s name and occupation from the marriage certificate it may help. And if we knew when he joined the army we might be able to find him in the 1901 census.

  • Many thanks Elwyn for your kind reply. It does seem like you have the same information I have of him also and hard to get any further when no birth records are to be seen thus not finding any other info.

I did not know about GRO, so have been on and ordered the marriage certificate so am hopeful that there is some information there for me, so many thanks for that! Sometimes feeling like Newzealand is so far away to get the help I need at this stage but will keep going.

Again if anyone out there had relatives that came to newzealand from 1921 on with the name Steele or Turkington please feel free to get in touch and I can look to see if we have relatives in common...Feel like there is possibly many cousins in England and Ireland!

    Thanks Kelly
