There is also a website that details some of the history and families of Cavan Township and the Upper Ontario area.  For your reference it is listed below:

    http://www.ontariogenealogy.com/Durham/cavanhis.html

You might also consider creating a profile for the Bradburn family on the XO Chronicles feature which is located at the top of the page.  Many of our members read these profiles and there can be very meaningful sharing and collaboration with other who may also be researching the same family, or in your case, families in particular areas.  The link is below:

If you need further assistance, please let me know.

The very best of luck with your research and thank you for your interest in the Ireland Reaching Out Programme.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Am descended from Richard Bradburn and Margaret Mcdowell through their son George born c 1817. He married Ann Livingston and they emigrated to Sydney Australia 1840's ? Their son Francis was my maternal grandmother's father. Am interested in tracing the family in Co. Cavan back to when they arrived in Ireland probably in 17th century.

  • Hello Denise  My maternal grandmother Ethel was a Bradburn. Her grandparents were George Bradburn and Ann (Livingston) so they are my GGGrandparents. They must have had 8 children. My grandmother's father Francis was born 26/1/1848 in the Rangers Valley New England district NSW on the property of the Bloxsom family. He married Mary Jane Gabb in Ashfield Sydney in 1873 and died in Marrickville Sydney 1906. My Grandmother was only 13 when he died and she was the youngest child by six years. She always said she had Irish ancestry and my father found the original records about 30 years ago. when researching genealogy as a post retirement hobby. Some Irish expressions crept into my grandmother's speech (I have never heard them since) so she must have heard them from the grandparents or her father. If you have any information about the family in Ireland I would be pleased to hear from you. I think Ann Livingston's parents were Francis and Serah (Sarah) nee Argue? but I can't find any trace of a birth record in Drung for Serah so she may have been born in another parish. I have DNA matches with descendants in Ontario Canada and a distant match with a descendant of George Bradburn born 1760s? who also lives in Australia.

  • Hi Julie, I cant find Francis in birth death marriages but he could have been between sarah 1846 and George 1850  as they had a baby every couple of years.I would think they would have a Francis in the naming  as they went with the Ancestors names first.Did your GGgrandmother marry Russel Polack or Robert Freeman? My line comes down from Robert William 1855 married Sarah Bennett.  Argue line - Ann Levistone /livingston siblings were Henry 1821, then Ann 1823,Abigail 1825,Robert 1827,Francis 1828/Jane 1831,James ?.  Anns parents were Sarah ARGUE born 1799 and Francis Leviston 7 march 1787.Drung Cavan Ireland. They married 6 Dec 1799 in Drung Cavan Ireland.FRANCIS parents were Henry Leviston 1762 Cavan Irelnd.and Abigail ?born 1760, they married 1794.   -   Anns father FRANCIS  Leviston had 3 siblings Mary Ann 1796, James 1801, and Henry 1808.  will keep looking and add any other info.I also have done my DNA. Hope this helps.

  • Hi Denise Thanks for the prompt reply. My maternal grandparents were Russell Polack and Ethel Bradburn. They also had a son Russell who died in WW2. He was in New Guinea in the RAAF. I noticed that your Bradburn ancestor had a daughter. Any siblings? You said your mother was a Bradburn. There is a wiki link to my ancestor Francis. Seems the family lived in the southern areas of Sydney and St Thomas's church at Enfield is the main burial place. I have found the birth date for Sarah Argue Drung 1799 but she must have married Francis Leveston c.1820 to tie in with the childrens' birth dates. I found a birth record for Francis as c.1780 although his christening was on 7/3/1787. Sometimes there are contradictions in the records like somebody is christened before they are born! There is a Cootehill connection for the Levestons and Bradburns, in the northen part of Cavan. Bradburns had land plots there (George Alexander mentioned) and George Bradburn was born in 1762 in that area but he is not the father of Richard, probably an uncle or cousin. Also the Levestons intermarried with the Bradburns but a couple Henry and Abigail Leveston are too young to be Francis's parents. You mentioned a Henry Leveston born in 1762. I found one born at Cootehill in 1755, died 7/11/1817. Is this the same person? Can't find the wife's name. Will try to find the marriage record.
Re the Mcdowells. Found Margaret's birth record as c.1778 at Drumgallon Cavan (Richard Bradburn c. 1774 at Killnecross Cavan) so all came from the area. Still haven't found Sarah Argue's parents. There is a Thomas born c.1750 who married a "mrs Argue" nee Hingston who came from Kilmore and Ardagh. They are too old for Sarah's parents but grandparents possible. Argue is a very old Gaelic name in Cavan so they may have been there pre Protestant Plantation. The Bradburns were I think English Protestants and the Levestons (Livingstons) and Mcdowells probably from Scotland (Galloway?). I would like to find where they came from. Keep in touch and best wishes for Christmas and 2108.

  • So glad to connect with fellow “Drung” Bradburn descendants

I also descend from Richard Bradburn (1775) and Margaret McDowell (1777)

According to Ireland, Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911 they had the following children:

    Edward Bradburn 1800–

    Mary Jane Bradburn 1802–1845

    Jane Bradburn 1803–

    Thomas Bradburn 1805–

    Ann Bradburn 1807–1869

    Margaret Bradburn 1810–

    Elizabeth Bradburn 1812–

    George Bradburn 1817–1864

Cavan Township was settled in the early 1800's principally by natives of Ireland and their descendents. Among the U.E. Loyalists and military claimants to whom early grants of land were made in Cavan we find the following: Alexander, George and John Bradburn are listed  (Source: http://www.ontariogenealogy.com/Durham/cavanhis.html)

I descend from Mary Jane Bradburn who married William VanCamp abt 1820 in Ontario.

They had 10 children before her death (he married again x 2 and had more children)

    George VanCamp 1823–1896

    Mary VanCamp 1825–1906

    William VanCamp 1828–1895

    Lucinda VanCamp 1829–1858

    Thomas Livingston VanCamp 1830–1912

    Henry VanCamp 1831–1898

    Jane VanCamp 1835–1846

    Abigail Margaret VanCamp 1837–1914

    Nancy VanCamp 1839–1925

    Alfred Thomas VanCamp 1845–1916

I descend from George of Wm and Mary Jane), their eldest son who married Mary Bradburn

Her parents were John Bradburn (b 1788, Drung, Cavan, Ireland) and Elizabeth Foster

We believe John’s parents were George Bradburn (1762 Cootehill, Cavan, Ireland) and Mary Levinston (b. 1862 Drung, Cavan, Ireland).  It is this George who is referred to as an early settlers in Cavan Township, Durham County, Ontario, Canada.

George and Mary Levinston had the following children born in Drung (I believe – have no records)

    John Bradburn 1788–1842

    Elizabeth Bradburn 1790–1863

    Thomas Bradburn 1791–

    George Bradburn 1792–

    Alexander Bradburn 1797–1879

    James Bradburn 1801–1888

I believe the “George and John Bradburn listed in the historical reference are father and son George and John.  There are other Bradburns who I believe are from the Alexander mentioned. It has been tough to sort out who belongs to who since then are so many in the same area and they all used similar given names.

I am interested in finding out all I can as I hope to visit Drung in May 2018.

It seems the Leviston family is entwined with the Bradburns (one child of William and Mary Jane has the middle name Livingston even though I know of no documented Levinston connection!)

  • Interested in a Mary Anne BRADBURN married a Thomas ALLELY not sure where, but Thomas came from Drumary, Co Monaghan. They were having children approx 1810 - 1817 again not sure of the area, it is down as Clones, but not proven, this was taken from the death register for James ALLELY one of their sons who died in Canada.
