Hello!

I am hoping to find information on Matthew Furey, born about 1820 in County Down, Ireland.  Parents are unknown.

He married Sarah Ellen McCauvera/McCanvera around 1840.  They had the following children:

1.  James Furey born May 1841 in Kilbroney, County Down

2.  Catharine Furey, born Aug 1843, in Kilbroney, County Down, Ireland and I believe that she died in 1910

3.  Sarah Mary Furey, born 5 Aug 1845 or Sep 1850 in Kilbroney, County Down, Ireland.  She emigrated to the US in 1864,  Married James Hyde and lived in McKean, Pennsylvania, where she died 5 May 1916

4.  Mary T Furey, born Jul 1849 in Kilbroney, County Down, Ireland.  She died 19 Apr 1902 in Kane, Pennsylvania.

Thank you very much!

  • Dear Tina:

Many thanks for your query to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site!

The children that you mention born to Matthew are listed in the Kilbroney Roman Catholic Registers which have been transcribed on the Roots Ireland database.  The mother's name is listed Ellen McAnvera and Ellen McAuvna.

The registers are available through the National Library of Ireland at the following link:

    https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0450

You might note that there are registers for funerals and deaths in the parish that might be of interest to you.

Graveyard inscriptions may also be of assistance to you.  There is a website that contains some information that may be of use to you.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • I searched the Kilbroney area for Furey families in the mid tio late 1800s but can't find any at all. There were a couple of other families in Co Down but they were Presbyterian. You mention that Catherine may have died in 1910. Was that in Ireland? (I can't see a death that matches that in the statutory records).
