I am trying to find the parents of my ancestor Robert Stevenson who was born 21 Nov 1821 in Donaghadee, Down, Northern Ireland and died 18 Feb 1878 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  He married Janet Munro 6 Jun 1841 in Glasgow, Scotland where they had 2 children before immigrating to Toronto sometime between 1844 and 1848.  He was a seaman and later a wharfinger in Canada.  His children were Robert, Janet, Sarah, John, Isabella, James Alexander, Agnes, William and George.  Family was Methodist.   Any suggestions would be welcome.  Thank you.   Marion Walter email  marionwalter@gmail.com

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Roots Ireland has the record for the Church of Ireland parish in Donaghdee.

Below is the only Robert Stevenson record that came up whem I searched. Note surname is shown as Stephenson on the transcription. Are you aware of siblings to Robert?

  • If you are sure Robert was Methodist at birth, then it might be worth checking the Donaghadee Methodist baptism records which start in 1815. There’s a copy in PRONI, the Public Record Office in Belfast. They are not on-line so far as I am aware.  His parents’ marriage won't be there as there were no Methodist marriages in Ireland at that time. The earliest was 1834/35. Prior to that Methodists normally used the Church of Ireland.
