My great grandfather was Robert Anderson, son of William and Margaret (nee Mathewson of Listunney, Ardstraw) Anderson, born Feb 1845. Known sibling are William John, Eliza Margaret, Abram, Andrina Gregg and James Babbington Anderson. Robert came to Victoria, Australia in 1863. He was a draper. He married Eliza Nicholls in Sandhurst, Victoria in 1871. They had four children but only two survived. Robert died in Melbourne in July 1891 from ruptured appendix.

I can see William Anderson in Griffiths Valuation for Carnally in 1859. He had plot 4 which was a farm of just over 70 acres. So well off by local standards. You can see where the farm was using Griffiths maps.
You can use the Valuation Revision records to see when the farm changed hands, and from that it is often possible to find a death certificate (1864 onwards).

It had changed hands by the time of the 1901 census as there are no Andersons in the townland then.
I checked for post 1858 wills but no Anderson from Glenknock left one. Or at least not one that required probate.

Hello Elwyn
Thank you for the time and effort you have put in on my behalf. My main concern at this time is to name William's parents. There is a draper in the main street of Newtownstewart named Robert; so as my great grandfather was also named Robert and became a draper I had hoped there might be a connection there - maybe a brother to William. I have not been able to follow William back any further. (The William Anderson who died at Breen is not ours. He was a widower at death but Margaret was still alive in 1864 when that death occured.)
I am hoping to connect with someone that has the ancestral line further back.
Once again thank you for the time, interest and effort on my behalf.
Glenda

The 1833 tithes have a John Anderson farming in Glenknock then as well as William, so they are likely to be connected.

You haven’t said what denomination the family was. If Church of Ireland then all the early church records were destroyed in the 1922 fire. If Presbyterian there are 8 churches in the area. Ardstraw has records from 1837, 1st Castlederg from 1823, Douglas from 1831. The others records are all much later. Copies of the above Presbyterian records are in PRONI. RC records start in 1860 for Ardstraw East and 1846 for Ardstraw West.
You night find a gravestone for the family if they were reasonably wealthy farmers.
William’s father was likely to be another farmer. The farm usually went to the eldest son, and farmers tended to stay put in the one spot if they could.
You could try the Registry of Deeds records to see if there are any early leases etc for the Glenknock farm. You might get lucky and find a 3 lives lease which often helps trace a generation further back.
