Dowey - Meigh

The couple married on 26.6.1892 at Meigh chapel. The civil certificate gives Anne’s address as Meigh and her father as William Dowey, farmer. See:

William Dowey in listed in Griffiths Valuation for 1864 as being on plot 15, a 9 acre farm. His name remains as tenant till 1913 when he is replaced by James Colgan.

I can’t see Ann Dowey’s birth in the civil records from from 1864 onwards so she probably was born before that. You might want to search for her baptism on the NLI site. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes

Thanks Elywn,  I hadn't seen the 1901 Census for the Colgan family before.  My grandfather, great grandmother and grandfather are listed.  How did you track William Dowey in 1863 through to James Colgan in 1913 through the Griffiths valuation.  The land is still in our family today.

The records that take Griffiths forward are called the Valuation Revision Books. Those for Northern Ireland are on-line on the PRONI website. They go up to around 1929. https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/proni

There is also a further set of  records in that series which go up to the 1960s, but these are not on-line. They are in paper format in PRONI and a personal visit is required to view them.

To Danny Colgan, etc.

My second great granduncle was Patrick Hoey, chr 28 Feb 1849, Meigh.  He married Mary Ann Dowey on 22 Sep 1871 in Meigh.  Mary Ann's father is listed as James Dowey.  I don't know if there is a connection or not.  I believe that the following couple is this same couple.  Mary Ann was born about 1849 as well.

No record of Mary's husband, Patrick, was found - he may have abandoned the family, or works at a job that takes him out of England or he is in the military.

This certainly appears to be Patrick's wife.  The census record also indicates that she has three children still living.  

I have to make another post on the Hoey family.  I descend from Patrick's sister Margaret, who married a David McCracken.  There were ten Hoey children, some of whom came to America and settled in New York City.  There are three Colgan sponsors of the Hoey family from Meigh - Mary, Anne and Jane Colgan were sponsors and most likely related to Mary Ann.

Hi Rich,  great to hear from you.   I have Mary Anne Dowey married Patrick Hoey in my family tree.  If my records are correct, Mary Anne Dowey was the niece of William Dowey.  Her father James being a brother to William.  My father was born near Meigh.
