I have plans to visit Ireland in April of this year. I have been to Ireland 3 other times and can't wait to come back. - I will have about a week to try to connect to my Grandparent's place of birth in Galway County. After that I have plans to do a Music tour with Eileen Ivers. I have been in touch with Celine Seoighe of Inis Oirr (we met on the island in 2017 when I was visiting with my grandson and have been corresponding back and forth since then, and she told me to contact Leo Finnegan and Gerry Naughton. My grandmother was born in Cloonkeen and my grandfather in Tuam. I have an address for my grandmother--House 4, Cloondarone (Claretuam, Galway). My grandmother, Julia Donoghue, was born in 1884 to John Donohue and Catherine Kate Mitchell. My grandfather, James Joseph Farrell was born on November 19, 1883 to Patrick Farrell (1831 to 1900) and Kate O'Neill (1840-1920) in Tuam. This information was gotten mostly from Ancestry.com but also some came from Ireland XO in 2017 when I was actively pursuing information. I would love to be able to spend a few days in Tuam area and talk to someone who could give me more information. My planned visit is early April. Please contact me when you can so I can begin my plans. Thank you in advance for your help!!
Sincerely,
Mary Kathleen Farrell

Mary,
These are very common names, so we will need a bit more information to assist you. In the 1901 Irish census there were 720 people named James Farrell and about 300 named Julia Donohue (and variants), so you’ll hopefully understand. We need their approximate years of birth. If they died in the US, you may be able to get their parents names from death certificates. That would help too.
When do they first show up in censuses inthe country they moved to? What year of immigration does that census show?

Kathleen:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Can you clarify when your greanparents left Ireland- 1800 or 1900. I looked for marriage records for James Farrell and Julia Donoghue and did not locate a record. Let us know when you get additional information.

I will continue to try to gather information. My grandparents left Ireland in early 1900's--possibly 1906 or around that time

New information provided by Mary Kathleen Farrell
Hi, Gerard has been in touch with me and I have some more information from Census. James was born in 1884 in Ireland (does not say which Parish). He arrived in USA 1901. It is showing that Julia arrived in 1901. (Another record showed 1903) James' mother's name was Kate Farrell and was born in Ireland about 1850 and arrived in USA in 1903. She was a widow. James was a meat cutter. According to these records, Kate Farrell lived with them in their house, along with 2 borders, Peter J. Mcguire, age 40 and Lawrence Mcguire, age 41. I also am showing a Lawrence and Patrick Mcguire living with them in 1920. There is another person showing living in the house--Margaret Farrell who is a niece to James. I think she was born in USA and it is showing that her father was born in Ireland. She was a single woman at that time. James and Julia had 8 children--James, John, Thomas, Julia, Joseph, Edward, Elizabeth, Margaret. That is all I have for now.

Mary Kathleen:
I think your next step is to find death records or obituaries for James and Julia which might should show parents names. There are too many James Farrells born around 1884 with a mother Catherine and Julia Donoghue would be less common but we/you would need the parents records.
Did a quick check on www.irishgenealogy.ie and there were a total of 84 James Farrell civil birth records from 1882-1884.
The Naturalization record for James may provide some clues.
In general, Donoghue would be a Cork surname and Farrell was found in every county with Longford and Dublin having the highest numbers.
Autosomal DNA testing may also be helpful.

Hi Mary Kathleen,
Kate (O'Neill 9 / McHugh 1 / Malley 1) Farrell's husband Patrick Farrell died in 1900. Appears the mothers maiden name may have recorded incorrectly for two of their childrens births.
See attached death record.

Hi, I have much more information. James J Farrell, born Nov 19, 1883, Galway. His father was Patrick and mother was Kate. James married Julia Donoghue on July 29, 1908. (Not sure if spelling is with a g or without) Julia was born in Cloonkeen, Galway. Her father was John Donohue born in 1838 in Galway and her mother was Catherine Kate Mitchell, born in Galway. They married in Kilconly Church, Tuam. Julia had siblings: Mary, Michael, Bridget, Delia, Catherine, John, Margaret Mary.
James and Julia actually had 10 children. (I only knew of 8) James died January 18, 1942. James had a brother, Patrick born in 1886, Cloondarone, Galway. James' father passed in 1900 in Tuam, Galway. James' mother, Kate, passed in 1920 in Galway at age of 80. She had 8 children James sister, Margaret died on January 21, 1939. His brother, Thady died in 1939 in Galway. James died in Baltimore, MD on January 18, 1942.

Gerlish:
Nice find!
I did locate the 1901 census record for Kate and the 1911 census record for Thady and family.

I did not see any Donoghue families in Cloonkeen in the 1901 census.
You indicate that Kate Farrell returned to Ireland and died in 1920. The only death record I could find for a Kate Farrell was a 1918 record for a 77 year old Kate who died in the Tuam workhouse.

I have been putting posts on the board but have not gotten answers so I think I'm doing it wrong. This is a continuance of the foregoing posts. I am visiting Ireland in April 2020 and hope to visit Tuam and/or Cloonkeen to see if I can find any more information about my grandparents' family. I'm not sure how to proceed. Is there any way you can help me with this?
