I am looking for help in understanding where I might go to find more family records that predate the famine era migration.

Looking for help understanding which parish this family member would be in....Protestant I think given that several generations later were Presbyterian ministers.

James Wherry b. 1764 at 5305 Derry cross Rds, Londonderry.  Married Mary Louise Dick (1776-1852)--her father was John Dick (1736-1801)

One of their sons was James Wherry II born May 18, 1808.  They all emigrated to the US in 1812.

Thank you for any tips as we plan our trip.

  • Hello NeilAnn,

enjoy your trip and i hope that you find out lots of Genie info.

Just wondering if you have any info on your Dick family connection?

I have access to a Priscilla Dick who married into the Moody[Mudie] family. However they are bit down the road at Limavady and Cloney.

    Cheers

  • Hi, John,

All I have are the dates stated in my first post and that John Dick died March 31, 1801 in County antrim, Belfast, Northern Ireland---all second hand sources.  His daughter that married into my Wherry line was Mary Louisa and she came to the US and died Nov 24, 1852 in Armagh, Indiana, Pennsylvania, United States.  56 yrs old which I guess was a full life for many at that time.  Interesting how so much of Pennsylvania is named after the homelands of immigrants.

  • You say that James Wherry was born in 1764 at 5305 Derry Cross Roads, in Co Londonderry. Unfortunately I cannot find any such place. (The house number bit must be wrong as there were no house numbers in the 1700s, but I can’t find any townland name that fits the Cross Roads part either). The address has me stumped.

I looked at the 1831 census and there was no-one named Wherry in the County at all. Likewise in Griffiths Valuation c 1860).

In any event, not many parishes have records from the mid 1700s and early 1800s so it might be hard to find any information even if you did have an identifiable location. DNA testing might be the only way of identifying the family background.

  • Thank you, Elwyn.  I couldn't get it to map to anything and just assumed it was antiquated in some way.  A similar address (different number same road) is listed for the birth place of James Wherry/Wharry's 3 kids Margret 1800, John 1804 and James II 1808 at Derry Crossroads.

This family left Ireland in 1812 for America on the Guerrier (from a story, not an official ship manifest).  Would love to find an official record of the emigration.  There's a big tale about the Guerrier doing battle with the Constitution when they were enroute but I suspect that is largely fiction.

I did just find one account that suggests James Wherry married Mary Louisa Dick in Ireland (Derry or Antrim) after she was widowed (Thomas McCleary).  She had 2 children with Thomas before he died.

Thank you for checking on the address for me.  That was far more than I knew to try.
