Hello,

I am having great difficulty deciphering a place of birth for a John Monaghan, aged 52, wife Mary, aged 52, born Sligo, recorded on the 1881 England census at 52 Darnley Street in Liverpool. I can see that he was born in County Mayo, but despite all efforts cannot read the word beginning Ba....!! I have experience of Mayo genealogy and have looked at the website townlands.ie to see if there are any places which could fit, but I am still none the wiser. I have attached a copy of the census and would be very grateful if anyone could decipher the place name.

Many thanks

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I went through all 149 Monaghan (and Variant) Griffiths records in Mayo and did not see many "B" townlands and nothing close the name on the census.

My out of the box suggestion is Bundorragha in Kilgeever civil parish.

  • Hello Roger,

Many thanks for your suggestion. I'll have a look at Bundorragha. Do you think the first letters could read Balina....something Should of course be Ballina..etc. My best guess was Balinaiad, which, if you key Balinai ' ad, with an apostrophe before the last letters "ad" into google it returns with a townland called Ballinafad (I know there's a Ballinafad in Sligo). Ballinafad, Mayo is in the parish of Drum, which was at one time called Drummonaghan....do you think the Monaghan bit is just coincidence??

Again, thanks for taking the time to help,

    Best wishes

Sheila (my other half is Mayoman)

I could not tell if there was another letter after the HA or just a flourish.  I can't see Ballinafad. Good luck!
