I am searching for any information relating to my 2nd great granparents Patrick and Ellen Curly Carroll.  I know their son Simon (my great granfather) was baptized 28 Dec 1857 in Ballymacward/Clonkeenkerrill and that his sponsors were Hugh Carroll and Catharine Curly.  Any information about the Carroll or Curly families in this area would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

  • Hi RPC

The Carroll and Curley families in this area were sometimes employed as herders and thus may originate in a different place than where they settled.

I have researched these familes in the general East Galway area as well as another herd family , the Reynolds

You can contact me by email: martinjcurley@gmail.com for more information

  • I’m also reasearchisng the surnames Carroll, Curley [Curly] and Qualters.

My great-grandparents Patrick James Carroll [1855-1925] and Margaret Mary Carr [1857-1923] both emigrated to San Francisco in the 1870s and I know from their death certificates that Patrick’s parents were Simon Carroll and Catherine [Trena] Curley and that Margaret’s parents were John Carr and Mary Dilleen [which becomes Dillon in some of the US records].

Simon’s obituary indicates he was born in Loughrea and Mary’s that she was born in Co. Galway. More specifically though, Irish records I’ve already located indicate that Mary Margaret and her siblings were baptized in the parish of Ballymacward and CLonkeenkerrill .

I became aware of the Qualters through a 1910 US census record indicating that the Patrick Qualters living in the household of Annie Carroll [married name Donovan], a daughter of Simon Carroll and Catherine Curley, was identified as a “cousin.”

From this exchange I think that we’re very likely related. In any event though, I would like to find out more about  (1) Simon Carroll and Catherine Curley and more about  and (2) John Carr and Mary Dilleen [Dillon].

I’d also very much like to better understand the links between the Curley and Qualter family [I traced the Qualters in the US, especially those that ended up in the SF Bay Area]

If there's a John Carr with wife Mary Margaret Dilleen/Carr in the old Ballymacward Cemetery, I'd certainly be interested in knowing that,

If all goes well, I would like to visit Ireland and the Loughrea area in the next year or two, and visiting any graves associated with any of my ancestors would be a meaningful experience.
