Hi there ,  I am trying to trace a relative called Connor Daly - he was a tailor and in the 1901 census was living in Gurteen.  Connor Daly born circa 1857  1901 census Mar 31 1901   Gurteen, Cappalusk, Galway, Ireland.    I cant find him on the 1911 cenus but can't find any death record either and he would have only been circa 50.  He could have emigrated to America as some of his children did.  Does anyone know of him?    Does anyone know where I would find the parish of Gurteen/cappalusk on this board?  Thanks in advance, Rach

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The official spelling of the townland is Gorteen which is in Ballymacward civil parish in East Galway. Cappalusk is the District Electoral Divison for Gorteen.

Like you, I did not find him in Co. Galway or anywhere in Ireland in the 1911 census. Also, did not locate a civil death record.

  • Thanks a million Roger :-)  So I should be updating my family tree to the proper spelling.   It is so frustrating when people just disappear like that.  He may have gone to America as many of his family did.  I will keep looking.    Thank you, Rach.  ps I recommend this site to just about everyone I talk to. You guys do amazing work, thank you

  • I found Conor Daly tailor on 1911 Irish Census in Upper Carrownea, Ballymacward. He is listed as a lodger with 3 others.

  • The 1911 census says he was single but I saw a marriage in 1870 in Ballinasloe (civil registration) that lists 4 possible women who married Connor Daly: Julie M'Gann, Bridget Lastly, Sarah Flaherty, Catherine Costello. Do any of those connect for you? I found a couple deaths 1911 and later but neither were in Galway and neither were tailors. (NIce to take a break from searching for my own relatives.)

  • Jmjrph, thank you so much. That does look like "my" conor daly only he has aged 14 years instead of 10!  he is 44 on 1901 census.     But how many Conor Daly could there be who were tailors?  But then why is he single when my Conor Daly was married to my distant cousin Judith/Julia/Julie McGann?  He should be a widower.  Also what happened to his ten plus kids.   I wish I could time travel.     I really appreciate you taking time out to do this. There are Kellys in my family tree - the name of the head of that household so will have to have a look at that angle I think.  I have a whole list of relations - mcganns in Monivea and attymon and ahascara and glynns and kelly and burke and bryan and callaghan and and and and lol.  If I can help you in your search please just shout.  Thank you again.  Rach
