Hello, does anyone have any information about Richard John HENNESSY (b 1826). and his 2nd wife, Margaret MCCARTHY who migrated to South Australia in 1849. Richard John was also known as John and John Richard, and his wife as Maggie.  I have lots of info from when they arrived in south Australia but nothing about their parents, or Richard's first wife.    Richard and his first wife had two children born in Cush Limerick Mary and Ellen.  Richard John and Maggie were my great grandparents.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The Bulgaden RC records start in 1812 and here is a link to the parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0864

You have Richard born in 1826 and I'm wondering if he was older. I found an 1829 marriage for a Richard Hennessy to a Julia Ryan in Bulgaden maybe this is too early. When I searched on Roots for baptismal records in Bulgaden with father Richard, I got the 1835 record below which may have be the same person as the bride on the 1829 marriage I located. Do you already have baptismal records for Mary and Ellen? Note: I did not search under John Hennessy

  • To Roger McDonnell,   I know this message of thanks is very late but I have to pass them on nevertheless, for the information you gave me ages ago for my great grandparents, John Hennessy and Margaret McCarthy.    I did use your help to discover more about my rellies And it helped me get through a brick wall.  Babe

  • Babe,
I just saw your message and hope you are still connected to Ireland Reaching Out. I am curious of what you learned about your McCarthy relatives from Bulgaden. My 2nd great grandmother was Maria McCarthy of Bulgaden Parish. She married Patrick Raleigh of Ballyholohan/ Drumcomogue, Emly, Tipperary on April 26,1838. I assume at the Martinstown Church. Although they identify a townland in the parish registry, I can't make it out. I think it starts with an 'm'. It looks like they were granted a dispensation so there might be some family connection. Michael McCarthy was a witness. An Elizabeth McCarthy sponsored one of her children baptisms in 1840.
According to her death record on RootsIreland, Marie was born about 1809 and died at the age of 68 in 1877.

    Thank you- Mary

  • Hi Mary,  I am quite sure that my gr grandfather was born 1826 Richard John Hennessy but he was always known as John Hennessy on all his official records (except birth) .  His first wife was Ellen Burke but she died in about 1876 after having some children and John remarried at 1858 at the age of 52 ( from his death certificate).   He remarried margaret McCarthy (who was approximately the same age as his eldest two daughters), had two more children, emigrated with his new wife, the eldest daughters,  and the two new children to South Australia (where I live) .They continued having children here, one being my grandmother.

I think my McCarthys came from Co Cork originally.  I occasionally search the Irish records but I can't confirm a great deal about them except that Margaret McCarthy's dad was Patt McCarthy, so he would have been born about  1815.
Now I have your contact info, I will keep a look out for names you mention and let you know .

    where do you live, Mary?

    regards Gae

  • Gae,

Thank you for responding back. There were a lot of McCarthys living in Cork. All I am definite about is that my Maria was living in Bulgaden in 1838.
