I am trying to trace my Clinton family who were in Westmeath and having children baptised at Taghmon RC church from 1837 to 1849.

Two of these were girls, Mary Clinton bapt. 1837 and Bridget Clinton.bapt.1848.

Mary Clinton married Thomas Higgins in 1864 and this couple had 7 children all baptised at Taghmon RC church but the family appears to have lived either been at Killucan or Killynan Cooke or Killynan Pratt. The family can be traced up to 1878 when their last child was born but following that date there is no record of them.

Rose Clinton married? James Connor sometime before her first child was born in May 1864 though I cannot find a marriage. This couple had 6 children between 1864 and 1875, again all baptised at Taghmon RC church, and once again all appear to vanish after 1875. Again it appears this family might have lived at Killucan or Killynan Cooke or Killynan Pratt.

I have searched the 1901 and 1911 census but find no record for either of these families. I do not know how or where else to start searching, would anyone have any idea of what became of these families?

  • Dear John:

Many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome!

As you are unable to find any of the above families, it is possible that they either moved out of the area or they emigrated.

I do see that  there is a Thomas Higgins in Taghmon townland in the 1901 Census and the link is below:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Westmeath/Taghmon/Taghmon/1784267/

Is it possible that this is your Higgins family member?

In addition, you might check the Civil Registration Indexes at Irish Genealogy.  I noted that there was  death record for a Margaret Higgins aged 59 in 1888.  The website for those entries (many of them have been digitised) is listed below:

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Dear Jane,

Thank you for this information I have checked out the Taghmon 1901 census but this Thomas Higgins was unmarried, the Thomas Higgins I am looking was married to Mary Clinton and they had children.

In the 1901 census of Killynan Cooke Townland in the Rathconnell Parish in the House and Building Return there is a record for a Thomas Higgins as the landholder but no family is shown, the next record is for a John Clinton who lives there and then the next record is a John Daly. Mary Clinton's mother was a Daly before her marriage so I suspected this could have been family living close together. However, if there isn't anyone at the Higgins house would this mean they had left the area?

    Kind Regards,

    John
