Hello,

We are travelling to Ireland this April and will be in Belfast and Newry between 11th and 15th April 2017.  We are searching for information on my husband's GGG Grandfather, Charles Quinn.  Charles was born around 1789 and enrolled in the Royal Tyrone Irish Militia in 1807.  He then enlisted in the 3rd (East Kent) Regiment of Foot on October 8, 1811.(UK Archives, WO 13/3276 & WO 12/12645) 

Charles Quinn had his Banns of Marriage read on July 4th. 1819 to Esther Coogan  at the Church of Ireland in Newry. (Page 23_Mic 1/47/A/1_Vol. 10_PRONI_Belfast).   Charles then became a soldier on the Convict Ship "Ëliza" and Esther travelled with him to Tasmania, Australia.  Esther Coogan was born in 1803, we presume in Newry.

Charles Quinn was transferred to 39th Regiment (UK Archives WO 12/2119 & WO 12/5264 Oct 25 1827

Charles Quinn died at Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia on 9th April 1832 (Nat. Archives Kew, England, WO 12/5266)

I would be deeply grateful to find any more information regarding Charles Quinn and Esther Coogan.

    Welcome to Ireland reaching out.

    As Charles enrolled in Tyrone it is very possible that this was his place of residence or was born there.

    www.rootsireland.ie has one  baptism record for a Charles Quinn, rootsireland is a subscription site so I have looked up the information for you:

    Charles Quinn baptised on the 12 June 1785 in Dungannon county Tyrone, father Terence Quinn, mother Anne Doherty.

    Unfortunately  I have not been able to find anything on Esther Coogan, Newry births gave no results, also the Tithe applotment records for county Down gave no results for a Coogan family (1823 - 1832)

    Thank you very much for your research in looking up rootsireland for me.   I am very surprised that Charles father would be a Terence Quinn, and mother Anne Doherty.  

    In the original findings, we had Charles as Carolus and he called his first son Henricus.  He also had a son John, a daughter Mary Anne and his youngest son was called Charles Wellington.  So Terence doesn't seem to fit in, as they usually called their children after members of their generation didn't they??  What are your thoughts on this??

  • Many early RC parish records were compiled in Latin. So Carolus is just the Latin for Charles and Henricus is Henry.
