SOME BACKGROUND:

My 2xgreat-grandfather, who emigrated to Canada, was called JOHN KELLY (ca 1797). His son was called RODERICK KELLY (ca 1829). After years of research, I found a listing for Roderick, showing his given name as JOHN KELLY. There was also some oral tradition that Roderick might have been a "junior" which would make the name RODERICK JOHN KELLY correct for both of them.

With no immigration records and little indication of the family origins, I used their neighbors and fellow immigrants' origins, plus John Roderick (Jr) Kelly's wife's place of birth as my compass.  CATHERINE LUTHER KELLY was found - thanks to researchers on this site - in Borrisokane. The settlers in Nepean, Ontario, Canada came primarily from northern Tipperary towns in the same area: Borrisokane, Nenagh, Templemore, Roscrea and others.

In searching those areas, I was brought to a ROGER (Roderick) KELLY family in Nenagh - also originally tagged by researchers here, but originally rejected by me because of the names and dates.

SOME DATA:

There is a ROGER KELLY (ca 1755) married to an HONORA RYAN (ca 1760) in Nenagh, with at least 3 children: MICHAEL KELLY (24 Aug 1793), HONORA MARGARET KELLY (29 Mar 1796), and RODY KELLY (28 May 1797).

RODY KELLY appears to be a fit with my 2xgreat-grandfather. He married a MARY MORRISSEY (04 May 1799) in Templemore on 07 Aug 1825.

THE PROBLEM:

While I found 4 children born to RODERICK and MARY (MORRISSEY) KELLY between 1830 and 1841, I did not find either a RODERICK/RODY/ROGER nor a CATHERINE - the 2 children who emigrated to Canada with their father.

Additionally, when the Kellys settled in Nepean around 1851, RODY's wife is listed as BRIDGET HEENAN. I have been unable to find anything related to Bridget Heenan's birth or marriage in either country. Another researcher referred to her as the "stepmother" which may be the case.

MY REQUEST:

I need to tie RODERICK JOHN KELLY (aka JOHN KELLY) of Nepean, Ontario, Canada, with RODERICK/RODY KELLY of Nenagh/Templemore, Tipperary, Ireland. An emigration record, ship's passenger list, or any type of notification that he did, indeed remove to Canada would be helpful. Any marriage record attaching Roderick Kelly of Nenagh with Bridget Heenan (either in Ireland or in Canada) would also identify the couple. Other useful documents would be birth records for RODERICK JOHN (Jr) KELLY and his sister, CATHERINE KELLY; a death record for MARY MORRISSEY KELLY - or evidence that she emigrated to Canada. Or - of course - any information that the Kellys of Nenagh are completely unconnected with my Kellys.

My son is planning a family trip to Tipperary this coming fall and I would love to have enough information to continue my search in the right town.

As a side note: Honora Margaret Kelly married William Harty in Roscrea and emigrated with several children to Minnesota, USA. I have followed her line and located one descendant who had a DNA test (as have I). While we were not a match, we are distant enough that I have still not given up hope that this may be the family I've been seeking.

Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated!

    Hi Frances,

In the 'Ireland Valuations Office Books 1831-1856' i found a land assessment for 1846 in Kiltillane, Templemore for a Rody Kelly.

    Townland: Kiltillane

    County: Tipperary

    Parish: Templemore

    Barony: Eliogarty

In the 'Ireland Roman Catholic Parish Baptisms under Birth, Marriages and Deaths' I found...

    First Name: Rody

    Last Name: Kelly

    Baptism Year: 1797

    Baptism Date: 28th May, 1797

    Parish: Nenagh

    Diocese: Killaloe

    County: Tipperary

    Father's First Name: Rody

    Mother's First Name: Honora Ryan.

The rody name is continued down along if it's your Rody.

In the ' Ireland Valuations Books' for 18th November,1847 you will find a Bridget Heenan

Townland: Lisaniska(Ballymackey), Nenagh in the Barony of Upper Ormond.

Ballymackey is on the outskirts of Nenagh town.

Surprisingly enough you might have more info in Canada than you think...

In the 'Ontario Census of 1861' I found a

    Name: Rody Kelly

Birth: 1831, Ireland (sometimes people didn't know the age or year they were born or couldn't remember or lied)

    Residence: Nepean, Carleton, Ontario, Canada.

    Census Date: 1861

    Birth Year(Est.) = 1831 Age: 30

    Marital Status: Married

    Religion: R. Catholic

    Event Place: Nepean, Carleton, Ontario,Canada.

I also found could be your gt. gt. grandfather in the same Census 1861 no first name :

    Name:  ?  Kelley

    Census: 1861

Event Place: Oro, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada

    Age: 64

    Marital Status: Married

    Religion: R.C.

    Birth Year(Est.): 1797.

Then in the Canada Census of 1851 I found:

    Name: Roderick Kelly

    Age: 22

    Birth Year(Est.): 1829

    Birthplace: Ireland

    Province: Canada West( Ontario)

    District: Carleton County

    Sub-District: Nepean

    Page Number 35

Also in the 'Canada Census of 1851' there was:

    Name: Bridged Kelly

    Age: 55

    Birth Year(Est.): 1796

    Birthplace: Ireland

    Province: Canada West(Ontario)

    District: Carleton County

    Sub-District Number:31

    Page Number: 35

Also in the same 'Canada Census of 1851'

    Name: Catherine Kelly

    Age: 20

    Birth Year(Est.): 1831

    Birthplace: Ireland

    Province: Canada West(Ontario)

    Sub-District: Nepean

    Sub-District Number: 31

    Page Number: 35

You will notice Frances all 3 are on the same page 35 and are more than likely together. You need to do a bit more checking in Canada i think there's more info. to be found there.Because your ancestors left in 1851 which was early there are few people who can go back further than that even with a professional genealogist. At that time i could not find any passenger lists for canada, i think it was later on in the 1880's they started keeping lists for immigrants.Go to your parish church where your ancestors resided and ask to see the registrars .

I hope i have helped you in some way.

  • Thank you, John.  I have located the Kellys in Nepean, Canada, and the records you noted for Rody are the same family. At that point the father was using his middle name, John, and my g-grandfather was Rody or Roderick. I have traced the family forward from 1851 and have even visitied the church and the farm they owned there. Without any recorded emigration, I guess I'll have to rely on DNA to solve this mystery.

Thank you for your efforts and for both the Valuations Office record and for finding Bridget Heenan. Perhaps tracing her will uncover something further. Is there anything in particular you would recommend I look for before - or when - I get to Ireland that will help my search?

    Again, thank you very much!

  • Hi Frances,

If there is any other info, any little snippet at all, let me know, it could lead somewhere. When you come to Ireland, there's a very nice lady running the North Tipperary Genealogical Centre here in  Nenagh. They open Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm, you can phone 003536733850 or email: tipperarynorthgenealogy@eircom.net  . Nora would go out of her way to help you. I hope this helps you in some way and enjoy your stay in Ireland.

    Best wishes,

    John Kelly.

  • Hi John,

I'm so looking forward to visiting Nenagh, Borrisokane, and Templemore - seeing the places where my ancestors once lived. I will most certainly contact Nora O'Meara, as well. Thank you for her contact information.

You've been very helpful and I just know the two collections of information will come together very soon.

    Best regards,
