Hi
I'm hoping someone can help me with a brick wall I have hit with my great great grandmother Kate Leech (nee Leary). The family story is that she was born illegitimately after her mother had a run in with someone from the English aristocracy, the mother was paid off to go to America and Kate was given to foster parents. I have found her on the 1901 census living with Margaret Kenney on Church Street in Gort, here she is listed as nurse child (along with a few other nurse children), in the 1911 census she is listed as adopted daughter. I'm wondering if there are any records that could give us a clue as to who her mother was? I've searched birth records for around the time I think she was born and also immigration records to see if anyone with the Leary or O'Leary name travelled to the USA and I can't find a thing, I'm wondering if Margaret Kenney adopted her is it possible there is a record somewhere.
The other strange thing is I can't find any record of her marriage to her husband John Leech (under Leary or Kenney). She had her first child Katherine Ann (my Great Grandmother) on the 29th August 1914, on the birth record she gives her maiden name as Kenney, it looks like John Leech's previous wife Mary Meehan died in 1913 so I reckon a marriage should have taken place at some point. My Great Grandmother went on to marry my Great Grandfather James Dalton and then came over to West Yorkshire but I do know that I still have living relatives in the area.
Thanks for any help in advance, it would be lovely find out something about where Kate came from. :)
